$500 for a mistake in the raid. No laughing in Discord. A hardcore guild in World of Warcraft Classic wants it especially hard – and thus attracts attention.
Some guilds in World of Warcraft take their business seriously – very seriously. There are strict rules and laws in guilds and hefty penalties if commitments are not met. However, a job interview caused massive attention in recent days. Because those who fail must pay $500 to the guild’s PayPal account. At least that was claimed. We look into what is true and how Asmongold reacts to it.
What job interview is it about? It’s about a “Recruitment Interview” of the streamer Mitch. He is trying to find a guild in WoW Classic Hardcore and is applying to “Frontier” – a hardcore guild with particularly tough rules.
Mitch is invited to a conversation on the guild’s Discord server and then confronted with several questions and rules. While the guild tax of 50 gold per week sounds acceptable, one might already choke at the second statement from Ahmpy: Because anyone who puts the guild in danger and messes up a mechanic must transfer $500 to the guild.
Fast additional rules come into play: Unwanted noises are to be avoided on Discord, such as sudden laughter. Anyone caught here gets a “strike” – and on the second strike, you’re out.
They also want to appear professional externally, so streamers who broadcast their gameplay must always wear a tie in the stream.
And, to show loyalty to the guild, the guild tabard must also be worn, even before joining the guild. Via WeakAura, it is checked whether all members have permanently put on the guild tabard.
This is how Asmongold reacts: The well-known streamer Asmongold also watched the job interview on YouTube and was shocked. Between laughter and disbelief, he listens to the conversation and finds surprisingly many points understandable – only the rule about the “500 dollars” seems a bit strange to him, as he isn’t quite sure how they intend to enforce this rule.
Do they really mean it seriously? Here’s the thing: No. Even though some sites sell the story as true, the entire interview is primarily a show – both Mitch and Ahmpy are playing along with this little game. This becomes particularly clear when you watch the stream from Ahmpy’s perspective (via twitch), who is casually farming dungeons and keeps breaking out into giggles – which, however, is not broadcast to Mitch on Discord, but only on his own stream.
The whole conversation is thus a parody of other guild applications that set absurdly high rules for themselves and many have probably heard of through “hearsay”.
However, one should not take this seriously. The two are streamers and mainly provide entertainment – and Ahmpy’s giggling clearly reveals that things are not as serious as some credulous people might want to believe.
Sometimes loot disputes in WoW Classic also lead to death – forever.
