After the success of Witcher and Arcane, a whole series of TV shows based on video games have been announced. We summarize what is known about them for you.
Video game adaptations have often turned out to be total flops in the past. Movies and series of major and popular IPs like Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, or Assassin’s Creed received devastating reviews from both critics and fans of the games.
However, in recent years, a turn seems to be expected. Detective Pikachu, Werewolves Within, and Sonic have managed to gather good ratings on the review site RottenTomatoes for the first time.
For TV series, Witcher and Halo have provided positive surprises and paved the way for more series. Here are 5 games and game franchises that have been announced to get their own TV series.
Resident Evil
- Provider: Netflix
- Release: July 14
What is already known: The series focuses on the Umbrella Corporation and takes place on two timelines: in 2022 and 14 years later in 2036. The story follows the two sisters Jade and Billie Wesker, who are the daughters of the scientist Albert Wesker.
In 2022, they move to New Raccoon City near their father’s workplace. There, they first have to find their way around at the new school and in their new life. In 2036, the zombie apocalypse has already broken out, and Jade desperately tries to gather information about the zombies while looking for her sister.
Albert Wesker is played in the series by Lance Riddick, known to fans of Destiny as Commander Zavala.
The Last of Us

What is already known: The TV series is based on the events of the first “The Last of Us” game, which follows the characters Joel and Ellie. After the outbreak of a terrible virus, large parts of the U.S. population have mutated into monsters, and civilization has completely collapsed.
Joel and Ellie try to survive in this post-apocalyptic world, where they not only have to contend with mutated fungal monsters but also with other humans who have become cannibals.
The main roles in the series are played by “Game of Thrones” stars Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Martell) and Bella Ramsey (Lyanna Mormont).
Assassin’s Creed

What is known so far: In fact, the gaming franchise will get not one, but several series. One will be live-action, and two others will be animated. A whole “Assassin’s Creed” universe is to be built.
However, nothing is known about the setting of these series so far, although AC is known to offer a very large selection after over a dozen main games, spanning many eras.
It is known that the live-action series has Jeb Stuart as writer. Most of you will know him for his work on the original “Die Hard” film. That gives hope.
Fallout

- Release: Unknown
What is known so far: Here too, little is known about the plot of the series. However, the setting is established thanks to the games. The nuclear post-apocalypse must not be missed in Fallout, of course.
More is known about the two main characters, played by Ella Purnell (Star Trek: Prodigy) and Walton Goggins (Tomb Raider 2018). While Goggins’ character is a ghoul who has been terribly mutilated by radiation, Purnell’s character is “cheerful and positive,” which is unsettling.
Jonathan Nolan, the creator of Westworld, is the producer of the series. The showrunners are Geneva Robertson-Dworet, known for her work on Tomb Raider (2018), and Graham Wagner, who previously worked on The Office and Portlandia.
Cyberpunk 2077

- Release: 2022
What is already known: The story of the animated TV series will revolve around a teenager who struggles to survive on the streets of Night City every day. He makes his way as a criminal mercenary called an Edgerunner.
The series will initially contain 10 episodes and is produced by Studio Trigger, which boasts big names like Hiroyuki Imaishi, Masahiko Otsuka, or Hiromi Wakabayashi. All of them previously worked on well-known and popular animes Kill la Kill, Promare, and Gurren Lagann.
There will soon be more information about the series. Netflix announced a reveal for June 8, where fans will likely see the first trailer.
