Dragons are among the most popular mythical creatures and are also frequently used in gaming. There is hardly an MMORPG without a huge and important dragon. We have compiled 5 of them for you.
There are hardly any other mythical creatures that are as widespread and well-known as dragons. In various parts of the world, legends about these powerful beings developed, which are sometimes friendly and sometimes hostile towards humans.
Countless books, movies, series, and artworks revolve around dragons, and game developers have also drawn from dragon mythology in numerous games. Especially in MMORPGs, there are often a variety of different dragons. Here are 5 of them that we find really cool.
Deathwing – World of Warcraft
This is Deathwing: Deathwing is one of the most famous dragons in MMORPGs and was originally not evil. His real name was Neltharion, and he was the leader of the black dragonflight and an earthwarden.
He was seen as wise and just, but over time Neltharion began to hear voices. The old gods whispered to him that other dragons wanted to destroy him and his flight, driving him into madness. The old gods ignited a tremendous hate against other dragons in him and he began to devise plans on how to subjugate them.
In a massive battle, he was defeated by the other dragon aspects, who turned against him together. Deathwing had to flee and hid in Deepholm, where he remained for the next years.
In the expansion WoW: Cataclysm, he eventually returns and is stronger than ever. His arrival tears the world apart and destroys large parts of the land. In two massive raid encounters, he is ultimately defeated by players with the help of the Dragon Soul.
Midgardsormr – Final Fantasy XIV
This is Midgardsormr: Even if he may not look like one, Midgardsormr is actually an alien. Thousands of years ago, he fled from his home planet, which was ravaged by war, taking 7 eggs with him along the way.
After a long journey through space, he reached the planet Etheirys, where the goddess Hydaelyn offered him refuge. The dragon settled on the planet, and soon his 7 children, the first brood, hatched from the eggs. They multiplied and populated the various continents, their wisdom was cherished, and their power feared.
But peaceful times soon came to an end. His children became embroiled in the machinations of the Ascians, and some of them lost their lives because of it. Midgardsormr himself ultimately led the Dravanian Horde against the “invincible” fleet of the Garlean Empire in the battle over Mor Dhona.
He and his dragons destroyed countless ships, including the flagship Agrius. The explosion was so tremendous that it devastated the entire region and sent the father of dragons into a slumber that lasted 20 years.
Players could face Midgardsormr multiple times in FFXIV, against his spirit in the dungeon Keeper of the Lake and against his young and powerful form in the raid against Omega.
Lord Nagafen – EverQuest
This is Nagafen: The red dragon was long considered one of the oldest and most powerful dragons in all of Norrath. He led the armies of the Ring of Scales to victory against the Tarkish Empire of the Elves. Many did not even dare to speak his name aloud.
Only in whispers was he spoken of, and there were rumors about him. He was banished and no longer part of the Ring of Scales. Only the dragon himself and the oldest leaders of the Ring know the exact reason for his banishment; however, it is said that he broke one of the greatest commandments of the dragons.
After his banishment, he had the fire goblins build a dwelling for him in the fiery depths of the Lavastorm Mountains, where he has remained ever since. He made a pact with the goblin king, who has since served him faithfully.
For many years, the residents of the city of Qeynos had to offer him a young girl as a sacrifice every year until a priestess of the goddess of love Erollisi cast a spell to make the dragon fall in love with her.
Lord Nagafen is one of the original raid bosses from EverQuest, along with 3 other opponents.
Aurene – Guild Wars 2
This is Aurene: The female dragon Aurene is a close ally of the player character in Guild Wars 2. Players protect her from the minions of the dragon Primordus when she is still a small hatchling and form a telepathic bond with Aurene.
She is the granddaughter of the great and terrible dragon Kralkatorrik, who devours the magic of Tyria and corrupts living beings with his breath. However, Aurene stands against her grandfather and supports the players in the fight against him by participating in battles against his minions.
During a fight against Kralkatorrik, she helps to lure the great dragon into a trap and reveals his weak points. But the dragon proves to be too powerful, and Aurene seemingly sacrifices her life to save the player character, being impaled by Kralkatorrik’s crystals.
However, removing the crystals from her body revives her, and together with the players, she resumes the pursuit of her grandfather. In the final battle against the embodiment of inner pain, Kralkatorrik is defeated, Aurene absorbs the magic of 3 elder dragons and a deity, and becomes an elder dragon herself.
Kaalgrontiid – The Elder Scrolls Online
This is Kaalgrontiid: The massive ancient dragon is the main antagonist in the major chapter ESO: Elsweyr and the subsequent zone DLC Dragonhold. He is referred to as the lord of fury and terror and was long imprisoned in the halls of Colossus.
When he was freed after many years, he immediately set to work to achieve his ultimate goal. Kaalgrontiid wanted to become as powerful as the dragon god of time and ruler of dragons, Akatosh.
Thus, he set off to Elsweyr to absorb the power of Jode’s Core, a powerful moon artifact. He hoped this would make him the third moon and make him as powerful as Akatosh.
According to an ancient prophecy, however, the creation of the third moon would bring a time of darkness and the birth of a new overlord, and it would destroy time itself. In the end, however, the dragon is defeated by the united forces of Nahfahlaar, the Dragonguard, and Queen Khamira.
