World of Warcraft is, as the name suggests, a world that is almost permanently at war. It is not just about the fate of individual heroes, but often about whole nations or large cities that are annihilated. Whenever a city was destroyed in the history of Warcraft, it usually had significant and dramatic consequences.
We take a look at the history of 5 cities that were destroyed for various reasons throughout the Warcraft story – and what impact that had on the story.
Dalaran
Dalaran was a city of the Alliance for a long time, inhabited by the mages of the high elves and humans. Although the mages often only intervened slightly in the conflicts of the kingdoms, they repeatedly sent envoys to the various kings or appeared when there were demonic or mysterious occurrences.
Because the mages of Dalaran were well acquainted with demonic magic and its protection, it was also a declared goal of the Burning Legion to eliminate the mages as quickly as possible.
One of the most impressive cinematics of Warcraft III showcases this exactly. The demonic Archimonde uses powerful magic to recreate the city of Dalaran out of sand – and then brings it down like a sandcastle. With the small detail that the real city was destroyed in the process.
It took many years for the remaining Kirin Tor to seal Dalaran under a dome and rebuild the city – only to turn it into the “flying city” with “Wrath of the Lich King” and transport it to Northrend. Since then, Dalaran has always been in the air and travels to different places where the help of the mages is needed.
The second – and probably final – destruction of Dalaran happened just a few months ago. With the launch of the expansion “The War Within”, the mages teleported the flying city to Khaz Algar. However, Xal’atath had mingled among the archmages and weakened the city’s defenses, which were subsequently attacked by Nerubians.
Although many people were evacuated, countless residents of Dalaran died in the attack.
The city was ultimately completely annihilated when Xal’atath destroyed Dalaran with the Heart of Darkness. Fragments of the city rained down on Khaz Algar and only a few mages were able to escape death. While the Kirin Tor are not completely wiped out, it will take a long time before the remaining mages have a true home again.
