The digital sales figures from the PlayStation Store for July 2019 for the PlayStation 4 are known. At the top of the sales charts are Grand Theft Auto 5 and Minecraft , two games that are many things, but not current. In other categories, the perennial favorite Fortnite dominates.
These were the best-selling games in the PlayStation Store: The list comes fresh from the Sony site. In Europe, the situation for PS4 in July 2019 looks like this:
- In first place is Grand Theft Auto V (a game from 2013)
- In second place Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition (originally released in 2009, available on PS4 since 2014)
- In third place: Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled
- Fourth place: FIFA 19
- Fifth place: EA Sports UFC

In NA, people are playing today’s shooters from yesterday on PS4
How does it look in North America? There, Grand Theft Auto V and Minecraft swap places. In the region of the USA, Minecraft is number one.
Then come games like Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare (2016), Rainbow Six Siege (2015), or Star Wars Battlefront 2 (2017).
In North America, the scene is even gloomier than here. There are no somewhat current games in the top 5 – not even FIFA 19. It’s known that they don’t like FIFA in the USA, they boldly call it “Soccer.”
Fortnite still huge in the PS Store
What about DLCs? In Europe, Fortnite (which comes from 2017) dominates the what is categorized as DLCs in the PlayStation Store. The online shooter takes places 1, 2, 3, and 5. A DLC for GTA 5 Online sneaks in at 4.
The so-called “DLCs” for Fortnite are all microtransactions: those who buy them receive new cosmetic skins in Fortnite for the PS4. The Breakpoint skin was particularly popular in the PlayStation Store. A 10€ package with an outfit, back accessory, and 1000 V-Bucks (equivalent to 10€), which can be earned in-game.
These skin offers that return the paid value in game currency have always been popular with Fortnite.
The Founders Pack of Fortnite, which was cheaper in the PS Store in July, manages to make it to fifth place among the DLCs.
Among the popular free-to-play titles in the PlayStation Store, Fortnite and Apex Legends lead. They are followed by Pro Evolution Soccer 2019 Lite, Brawlhalla, and Dauntless.
Summer 2019 is the driest in a long time – Even on PS4
What’s behind this: The charts from the PlayStation Store show that the gaming market for PS4 is thinned out for current titles and instead dominated by older games. Especially when they are well developed like Grand Theft Auto 5 Online, where the casino DLC is currently exciting players.
This trend can also be observed on Twitch, where suddenly WoW and GTA 5 Online are shooting up.
Every year, summer is thin in terms of new releases in gaming – but 2019 seems to be particularly bad. Because in 2020 the PS5 and Xbox Scarlett consoles are being released, many studios are probably already pre-producing their games, and at the moment there is a drought.
