In 2021, numerous new games were released, including survival games of all kinds. MeinMMO presents you with 3 new survival games that were released at the end of the year to sweeten your Christmas holiday.
Which games can I find here? We have compiled 3 games for you that were only released in the 4th quarter. These are brand new survival games that you can experience fresh in time for Christmas.
In doing so, we made no distinction between MMOs and single-player games, but tried to provide a reasonably broad selection. Therefore, you will find tips for gaming sessions alone as well as with friends.
How did we select them? The most important criterion is that the game has to be new. We aimed to present the freshest releases, which are not yet found in the top lists like our best survival games for PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
The goal is for you to discover something new. Accordingly, there are currently no or very few ratings. The assessment comes from the author, who has gained experience over many thousands of hours in all kinds of survival games. The list itself is unordered.
Icarus (PC/Steam)
What kind of game is this? Humanity is trying to create a new Earth. However, this fails, and the new planet becomes toxic for humans. Nevertheless, scientists discover a new, valuable material there.
You are to collect this. For this purpose, you will be sent back to the planet Icarus in sessions, where you are to survive, explore, and gather resources. Icarus fully relies on PvE and the game together against the inhospitable world.
The creator of Icarus is Dean Hall, the maker of DayZ, with his own studio RocketWerks. Icarus was released on December 3 for PC on Steam. A console version is currently not planned.
How does survival work? You play Icarus in individual sessions in which you are repeatedly sent to the planet. Each time you must build a base anew. However, acquired skills and learned technologies carry over between the sessions.
The most important resources for you are oxygen, food, and water. You must always keep an eye on everything and procure food or water. The wildlife of the planet and the environment itself with its various biomes always threaten you.
It is important that you only have a limited amount of time. You must be back at the landing ship before it takes off – otherwise you’ll be left behind. Time is therefore also a factor you must consider in your survival.
Icarus is suitable for those who enjoy classic survival games like ARK, Rust, or Conan Exiles but want to explore a new approach to the genre. With its focus on cooperation and lack of PvP, the game is especially suited for groups.
Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach (PC/Steam, PS4, PS5)
What kind of game is this? Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach is the tenth installment in the popular “FnaF” series, which includes several main titles and spin-offs. In it, you play as the boy Gregory, who is locked in Freddy Fazbear’s Mega Pizzaplex overnight.
You encounter horrific, living toys and monsters that hunt you down. Those who have played the previous titles will recognize many of them. Your goal is to survive until morning, when the “night protocols” are turned off and the monsters no longer see you as a foe.
FnaF: Security Breach was released on December 16, 2021, for PC, PS4, and PS5. More platforms are expected to follow three months after the release.
How does survival work? In FnaF, you do not have to worry about food or oxygen. You are primarily on the run from enemies and must be careful not to run out of battery on your flashlight. Because if you can see nothing, you become easier prey for your enemies.
Through surveillance cameras, you can monitor your surroundings without having to enter them directly. This way, you can see which areas are safe and where enemies are patrolling. If enemies get too close, you must quickly find a hiding spot.
By using color eggs or toys, you can distract monsters that have you in their sights. This makes it more likely for you to escape. Until morning, you will also have to solve some puzzles to proceed.
FNaF is suitable for everyone who enjoys a scare and loves horror games. The series is known for its horrifying, distorted portrayal of otherwise friendly toys. Ideal for those who like to tremble alone in the dark in front of the screen.
GTFO (PC/Steam)
What kind of game is this? With GTFO, the Swedish indie studio 10 Chambers, consisting of many Payday veterans, has created its first shooter. You play as a prisoner who must collect data in an abandoned research station in space.
You will be sent out in each round with a team of 4 prisoners, meaning up to 3 additional players or AI helpers. The complexes are teeming with aliens, which you should better avoid and not wake up. However, sometimes you will encounter puzzles such as doors that can only be opened through teamwork.
GTFO was released on December 10 exclusively for PC on Steam, but had already been in development for years and had several tests. Console versions are currently not planned, as the developers informed us.
How does survival work? GTFO relies on a tactical approach. The only lethal threat is the enemies, which you should avoid if possible. Because ammunition and healing items are scarce.
The game is intended to be extremely challenging and punishing, very much in the spirit of PayDay. You are expected to work together and communicate to get through the levels without dying.
However, once you have startled the aliens – through careless actions or alarms – you must defend yourself. Hordes will then rush at you, and you will need to coordinate to survive. However, the odds do not always look good.
One of the major changes at release was the implementation of optional checkpoints. This means that dying does not necessarily end a mission but only sets you back a little.
GTFO is suitable for everyone who enjoys big challenges and wants to work closely with up to 3 friends. Especially small groups that like to play games cooperatively should take a look at GTFO.
