In the week from December 13th to December 19th, a lot has happened in the MMORPGs. Two completely new games were announced, and Fractured announced a contract with the publisher Gamigo. Additionally, there was a new update for New World.
The highlights of the week:
- Depths of Erendorn is a new game coming out in Unreal Engine 5 and promises “Free2Play without all the garbage”.
- War of Dragnorox is an Old School MMORPG focused on dynamic events and a “Real Life Dungeon Master”. The payment model is also unique: There will be no costs other than a subscription.
The controversy of the week: A new book about WoW is full of allegations and also faces “antisemitism” accusations.
The discussion of the week: In 2021, 7 new MMORPGs were released, but many were not well received by players. The faults lie not only with the developers, says MeinMMO editor Alexander Leitsch:
New patch for New World, overloaded servers in Final Fantasy XIV
What happened with the major MMORPGs:
- New World has released the new patch 1.2. It brought the new winter event and a revision of the competence system in the endgame. The developers also talked about some innovations coming soon, including the update in January, new weapons, and the PvE endgame.
- In WoW, there are new details about patch 9.2. We also now know how the Shadowlands will be healed.
- The Elder Scrolls Online has launched the New Year’s Festival with many new rewards. There was also a first preview of the content for 2022.
- In Final Fantasy XIV, the servers are still overcrowded, so the complete sale of the MMORPG has been stopped. This is also exciting because despite the server problems, there hasn’t been a massive shitstorm.
- Guild Wars 2 has looked back at the year 2021 with all the updates and innovations (via GW2). The winter event has also started.
- In Black Desert, the major overhaul of 17 classes will be released next week.
What happened with the minor MMORPGs:
- Neverwinter has announced its next major update with a new adventure zone.
- Crowfall will be sold along with its chief developer to a new studio.
- PSO2: New Genesis has received its first major update with a new area and new level cap.
- Lost Ark has announced a lot of content for 2022.
- SWTOR has released a new update and is launching the first events for its 10th anniversary (via SWTOR).
- In Old School RuneScape, the Christmas event has commenced (via RuneScape).
- Mortal Online 2 has integrated fishing with a new patch and has revised swimming (via MortalOnline).
What happened with the MMORPGs in development:
- The sandbox game Fractured has a new publisher, and we had a chance to interview the CEO.
- Palia is probably one of the most interesting MMOs coming out in the next few years. We have introduced it in more detail.
- Undecember is a new MMO that looks like a mix of Path of Exile and Lost Ark.
