At least 15 movies, series, and animated adaptations of popular video games are currently planned for the streaming platform Netflix. We at MeinMMO provide you with an overview of which of your favorite games you might be able to watch as a series or movie on Netflix soon.
In 2022, Netflix already proved that adaptations of video games don’t always have to be a disaster. From the LoL spin-off Arcane to the dystopian anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and the zany Cuphead show in nostalgia style, the streaming platform has become a promising hub for gaming adaptations.
While the competition from HBO Max with The Last of Us and Amazon with Fallout is also slowly waking up, Netflix is already in the midst of preparations for 15 more projects that we will present to you here.
Assassin’s Creed
What is known about the adaptation? In 2020, publisher Ubisoft announced a series adaptation in cooperation with Netflix. It is supposed to be an “epic, genre-crossing” live-action film.
More “Assassin’s Creed” content is already in the works. Among other things, a mobile game was announced during the “Ubisoft Forward” showcase in September, which is also to be developed in collaboration with Netflix. An animated series is also planned.
Beyond Good & Evil
What is known about the adaptation? The adaptation is supposed to be a mix of live-action and animation. How exactly this will look is not yet known, however, a concept trailer hinted that actors could be transferred into the animated world via motion capture.
Rob Letterman, who already skillfully merged reality and CG in Detective Pikachu, is responsible for the adaptation (via What’s on Netflix).
BioShock
What is known about the adaptation? In February 2022, Netflix announced that it had reached an agreement with BioShock publisher 2K Games and parent company Take-Two Interactive. A live-action adaptation of the series is to be created under the guidance of Vertigo Entertainment.
Vertigo Entertainment is also behind films like The Lego Movie and the anime adaptation Death Note. Initially, it is supposed to be a film, although there are also rumors of a series.
Castlevania: Nocturne
What is known about the adaptation? Unlike other entries on this list, there is already a Netflix adaptation of Castlevania. The animated series in anime style followed Trevor Belmont, the protagonist of the fourth entry in the Castlevania series.
In June 2022, Castlevania: Nocturne, the successor to the successful series, was announced. The plot is supposed to follow Richter Belmont, the descendant of Trevor and Sypha from the first series. He is likely known to fans from the games Rondo of Blood and Symphony of Night.
As showrunner, Kevin Kolde takes over, who was also involved in the first series.
Devil May Cry
What is known about the adaptation? Adi Shankar, the executive producer of the Castlevania series on Netflix, announced in 2018 that he had acquired the rights to an animated series for Devil May Cry. The script for the first season is already said to be finished and will include 8 episodes.
The production was supposed to begin in early 2022, but there is still no date for the airing.
Dragon Age: Absolution
What is known about the adaptation? The animated adaptation of the RPG classic from BioWare is set to come to Netflix on December 9. In six episodes of 30 minutes each, the story of the young elf Miriam, who is supposed to steal a valuable artifact, is told.
For additional hype, there is a list of renowned actors who will voice the characters. Among others, well-known voices from Futurama, Avatar, and World of Warcraft are expected to be heard.
Dragon’s Lair
What is known about the adaptation? In spring 2020, the live-action adaptation of the retro game Dragon’s Lair was announced. Ryan Reynolds was named as the producer and star of the series.
When asked about the project, Reynolds stated on November 8 during a conversation with Collider that the adaptation would likely be a big surprise for many people. He was not sure if anything of this magnitude had ever been attempted before, said the actor.
Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
What is known about the adaptation? In addition to his work on Devil May Cry, Adi Shankar is also developing an animated series based on Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. The series will be titled Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix.
The hero of the series is supposed to be the cybernetic super-soldier Dolph Laserhawk. What is special about the project is that, according to Shankar’s own statement, he is supposed to have complete freedom to remix the IP from publisher Ubisoft.
Gears of War
What is known about the adaptation? Netflix has secured the rights to two adaptations of Gears of War. The third-person shooter is to be seen as a feature film and an adult cartoon. On November 7, Netflix confirmed that both projects are in progress.
Netflix will collaborate with the developer of Gears of War, The Coalition, but so far no filmmakers, directors, writers, or actors have been committed. However, there is potential for more stories to follow.
Horizon Zero Dawn
What is known about the adaptation? Netflix confirmed the live-action adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn after Sony Pictures had previously revealed the project in a briefing for investors in May 2022. Steve Blackman from The Umbrella Academy will be on board as showrunner.
The main character is supposed to be the warrior Aloy, just like in the games, Blackman explained in August.
Pokémon
What is known about the adaptation? After countless seasons and films of the anime and the live-action hit “Detective Pikachu”, there is now supposed to be a live-action series for Pokémon.
Joe Henderson is said to be involved as executive writer and executive producer of the project. According to reports, work on the series has been ongoing since July 2021, but no further details are known. Neither Netflix nor The Pokémon Company have officially confirmed the project yet.
Sonic Prime
What is known about the adaptation? The new animated series featuring the blue hedgehog is set to premiere on Netflix on December 15. Joining Sonic himself are other familiar faces like Tails, Knuckels, Shadow, and of course Eggman.
New will be the voices of some key roles, including Deven Christian Mack as Sonic, Ashleigh Ball as Tails, and Brian Drummond as Eggman. In total, there are supposed to be 24 episodes.
Tom Clancy’s The Division
What is known about the adaptation? Announced as a feature film for the first time in 2016, Ubisoft informed fans in 2019 that the project would go to Netflix. The already committed Jake Gyllenhaal is still said to be involved as producer and lead actor.
Most recently, director Rawson Marshall Thurber stated that filming “could hopefully start sometime in 2022.”
Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell
What is known about the adaptation? The fifth collaboration between Ubisoft and Netflix is an animated adaptation of the popular stealth/action video game series Splinter Cell. Derek Kolstad, the co-creator of the “John Wick” franchise, is involved in the project.
Variety reported in 2020 that Netflix had signed a contract for 16 episodes spread over two seasons, which Ubisoft later confirmed to Polygon. In 2021, Netflix presented fans with some important images for the series.
Tomb Raider
What is known about the adaptation? The animated adaptation of Tomb Raider was announced by Netflix in early 2021 but has not yet received a release date or timeframe.
Tasha Huo is involved as a writer on the project. She has previously written for The Witcher: Blood Origin, a miniseries prequel scheduled to release on Christmas Day.
