The zombie mode of the “Call of Duty” series offers a unique gaming experience. A designer has now released an image from the early development phase of Modern Warfare, showing zombies for the current CoD installment.
What kind of image is this? The concept designer Aaron Beck has created several designs for the CoD series. For “Infinite Warfare”, for example, he contributed operators; for “Black Ops 3”, he designed a mech (via Homepage Aaron Beck).
Apparently, he also worked on the current Call of Duty. Because on his Instagram account, the artist has now published a concept art from the early production phase of Modern Warfare, making the hearts of CoD zombie fans beat faster:
As a description, he states: “Zombie Runner? I finally got permission to share more [concept] arts from Modern Warfare. First, I’m showing here an unused concept from the early production phase. I thought it would be fun to play around with the classic CoD zombie gameplay. Here with a hint of a Russian special forces soldier and his duo of four-legged robots holding captured, zombified soldiers by the leash around their neck.
Zombies for Modern Warfare or the Warzone?
So was a zombie mode planned? As early as the announcement of Modern Warfare in mid-2019, the developers made it clear that there would be no zombie mode in the new CoD. The situation, however, was probably not as clear-cut as the statement suggested.
The concept shows clear connections to the storyline of the currently running CoDs, MW & Warzone, as a Russian soldier can be seen in front of a nuclear power plant. The Warzone map “Verdansk” took some elements from the Ukrainian city of Prypjat, which is near the damaged Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Furthermore, the Russian army plays a significant role in the story campaign. MyMMO colleague Sven Galitzki has some issues with this:
Are zombies still coming for MW or Warzone? The chance of a zombie mode arriving for Modern Warfare now is considered nearly impossible. A zombie mode is not a small side mission that can just be added as a “Season 5 Special”, but rather a completely unique gaming experience.
The situation is somewhat different for Warzone. Although there are currently few clues, data miners have already found several files indicating zombies. If Warzone runs longer than the current CoD, zombies could very well be possible here.
In the battle royale “Blackout” of the predecessor “Black Ops 4”, zombies were part of the mode, and depending on the direction Warzone takes in the coming months, the undead might also hunt annoying players who are just trying to escape the radioactive gas.
Currently, however, there is no official statement from the developers on this.
CoD Zombies: Popular Coop Mode with Many Secrets
How does the zombie mode work? This is a popular coop mode of the CoD series. Together with 3 other players, you land on a map that sends hordes of zombies at you in increasingly stronger waves. Meanwhile, you collect money, items, and weapons to help you in the fight against the undead plague.
The catch: The map is not fully accessible from the start. It is packed with puzzles and mechanics that you must solve or understand to progress in the storyline. Yes, there is a story – a mysterious web of immoral experiments and hidden powers. According to a leaker, there is supposed to be a reboot of the so-called Aether story in CoD 2020.
As the waves get stronger, you must shoot your way through the different areas of the map with as little panic as possible. You advance room by room to uncover the secrets behind the zombies and achieve high scores.
When new zombie content will come to CoD is still completely unclear. However, the developers have already announced that the current Warzone map “Verdansk” is far from over. Who knows what the creators have planned for us next.
