The developer of Fortnite responds to the criticism regarding the zombies. There should now be fewer “Cube Monsters” in Fortnite: Battle Royale. They were not well received by some fans. In eSports at TwitchCon, they are completely removed.
For 9 months, Epic has been preparing for the big attack of the Cube Monsters. And now there’s so much stress that they have to backtrack. Because professionals and casual players are sounding the alarm: This is no longer the Fortnite that one knows. Others love the chaos that the zombies bring.
This has changed since Wednesday: Since Wednesday, the Battle Royale in Fortnite has changed significantly. The new Halloween event “Nightmares” is active. And this doesn’t just consist of some Halloween costumes in the shop, but it significantly alters the gameplay.
Now there are PvE monsters everywhere in the game. The “Cube Monsters” are zombies that attack players and their buildings. These AI mobs bring a new element to Fortnite.
Zombies bring chaos to Fortnite
This is the problem: While at the beginning of a game, the Cube Monsters can still be easily eliminated or ignored, they dominate the end of a match and apparently decide more frequently who survives and who gets eaten.
Especially when the eye of the storm converges around a corrupted area, there are many zombies in the endgame.
It becomes more difficult to evade them, and they become a determining game element. They tear down buildings or eat poor cuddle officers.
Here you can see how a fragment of the cube simply appears on a streamer:
Fortnite has simply become a completely different game since Wednesday.
Many say that chance now determines who wins in the end. Apparently, some matches are decided by whether a player is overrun by zombies or not.
This is how the event is received: The event divides the players into two camps
- Some find it great because it brings variety and much more chaos overall. Some explicitly advocate for this “playfully wild” element in Fortnite
- Others reject the event because it changes Fortnite too much, and this chaos disrupts the normal tactics
This is how Epic reacts now:
Epic has now significantly reduced the spawn rates of the zombies. In the first phase, it remains at 85 zombies, but in the further phases, significantly fewer will appear.
- Phase 2: 25 (previously 40)
- Phase 3: 15 (previously 30)
- Phase 4: 7 (previously 10)
- Phase 5,6: 5 (previously 10)
- Phase 7,8,9: 3 (previously 5)
No zombies at TwitchCon
Twitch-Con will be quite different: The problem was even bigger in eSports. Here Patch 6.20 brought so many changes, that Fortnite would have been played completely differently.
Therefore, Epic has decided to pull the emergency brake. The grand finale of the tournament Fall Skirmish at TwitchCon will be subject to certain special rules that differentiate it from the current Fortnite. Although they play with Patch 6.20, but:
- Completely without zombies
- Without Pocket Fort, Pocket Fortress, and Shockwave Grenades
- and with improved shadows
