RTLZWEI had the broadcasting rights to Yu-Gi-Oh! several years ago. Those who regularly watched the anime may still remember the Shadow Realm. It played an important role in the duels. However, this place did not exist in the original.
What is the Shadow Realm? The Shadow Realm was a place where a duelist’s soul was banished if they lost a duel. It only appeared in the German TV version; in the English version, it was the “Shadow Realm”. While the “World of Darkness” existed in the original, it had a different purpose than the Shadow Realm in the German anime.
The World of Darkness was created by a card from Maximillion Pegasus. With it, the souls of the victims were absorbed and trapped there.
In contrast, the Shadow Realm was utilized whenever a duelist would have died or been severely injured in the Japanese version. Instead of the original punishment, the losers were banished to the Shadow Realm. This way, they mostly avoided a painful death.
There is now a film about Yu-Gi-Oh!. You can watch the corresponding trailer here:
The Shadow Realm was supposed to conceal the deaths of characters
What would have happened instead? In the Japanese version, the original, there were much harsher punishments instead of the Shadow Realm. In the Shadow Realm, the losers would still suffer for eternity, but the actual punishments appear to be more drastic:
- In a duel between Yugi Muto and Arkana, there was a disk of dark energy that would have immediately banished the loser to the Shadow Realm upon touch. In the original, it was a rotating circular saw that would have cut off the loser’s legs.
- Yugi and Seto Kaiba had to duel against Lumis and Umbra on top of a skyscraper. The duelists stood on glass that would shatter upon a defeat. This way, the losers would fall. In the German TV version, there was a portal beneath each piece of glass leading to the Shadow Realm.
- Yami Bakura sent Bonz, Sid, and Zygor to the Shadow Realm after a duel. In the original, they went to hell.
- Yami Marik banished Yami Bakura and Bakura Ryou to the Shadow Realm, although in the original they dissolved into smoke.
There were only a few cases where the Shadow Realm was not used. This was primarily the case when only threats were made. Duelists could also burn or drown after a defeat.
Unlike Naruto, which received some absurd changes on RTLZWEI, many fans in the reddit forum think the idea of the Shadow Realm is great. It is said to be a good method to conceal the deaths of characters and make the series accessible to a younger audience.
However, there is also the consideration that the Shadow Realm is much worse than death. After all, the souls would have to endure for eternity in the Shadow Realm, whereas a fall from a great height would lead to a quick death.
Do you think Yugi would have a chance to be the strongest anime hero of all? Which anime character is the strongest of all?
