A card game comes with a quirky, new rule. Those who smell will now face sanctions at tournaments.
The stereotype that gamers and nerds tend to lack hygiene is an old cliché. However, this does not seem to be the case at the tournaments of the card game Yu-Gi-Oh!, as a rule has now been introduced stating that players must not smell. Those who do face penalties.
What is Yu-Gi-Oh!? Yu-Gi-Oh! is a popular card game that, even after many years on the market, still enjoys an active scene. In Germany, the card game became famous primarily through the anime of the same name, which also revolves around duels between card players.

Hygiene rule ensures a clean appearance: A new rule for the tournaments organized by Konami was introduced on April 3, which immediately caught the fans’ attention. The translated rule states:
“With this new rule, all participants in the tournament are required to be clean and wear clean clothes. (…)
If you or your clothing is very dirty or smells bad, you may be penalized.”
The extent of the penalties was not specified.
Fans find the rule entertaining: The rule update is actively discussed on Reddit, and it primarily provides entertainment. Although most clearly support hygiene rules, one wonders how they will be enforced.
It is already suspected that there will be many “cringe” moments when one player accuses another of smelling. A referee would then have to decide if that is indeed the case.
Others wonder how the need for this rule even came about – there must have been some extreme cases in the past.
What do you think of this rule? Shouldn’t this be a matter of course? How would you implement such rules?
