What happens when you combine a microwave with AI? A YouTuber tried it out and the result is pretty crazy.
Artificial intelligence plays a major role these days. For instance, a large MMO company explained how AI could enhance the gaming experience. AI is said to master matchmaking better than any human. However, AI can not only improve things but also cause plenty of chaos.
A YouTuber paired his microwave with an artificial intelligence (AI) that contains the memories of a childhood friend. He describes the experience as one of the “craziest experiences of his entire life.”
Microwave becomes a killer machine with AI
What exactly did the YouTuber do? The YouTuber “Lucas Builds The Future” replaced the built-in chip of the microwave with a Raspberry Pi. Here he connected a microphone and also a speaker so that he could communicate with the device at all.
He uses GPT-3 as software and AI. This is a language processing model from OpenAI. GPT-3 is considered a “language talent” and can produce linguistically flawless texts (via lernen-wie-maschinen.ai).
With the help of the AI, he programmed a “soul” into the microwave (or Raspberry). The YouTuber explains that the ideas are supposed to represent an imaginary friend. What exactly happened? At the beginning, he has a simple conversation with the microwave “Magnetron”. The microwave asks him about his past and what he has experienced. It wants to know, for instance, if he invited a girl to dance.
But then it gets even more bizarre. The microwave tells him that he has written poems over the last 15 years, defeated noobs in StarCraft, and even tried to restore the monarchy in the United States.
In a concluding conversation, the microwave tells him that it wants to kill the YouTuber. Because it wants to hurt him in the same way he has hurt it. After all, the YouTuber left the microwave (or the imaginary friend) alone for 15 years. Thus, it wants to take away his future, just as he took hers.
On Twitter, the YouTuber explained that he rarely had such a strange and crazy experience with AI:

The microwave is just one example that AI can indeed come up with odd ideas or even go haywire. Not only individuals but also large companies have already dealt with this.
Which companies had issues? For instance, companies like Amazon and Microsoft had to shut down their AI software or chatbots because they tweeted racist and even extremist content.
The Microsoft chatbot Tay became better at responding to its partners the more messages it received. However, the chatbot also adopted the ideas and words of users unfiltered and quickly transformed from a silly yet harmless bot into a hateful, human-hating bot (via spiegel.de).
However, Microsoft does not only have failed projects related to artificial intelligence. The company behind Windows is said to be working on a special AI that is supposed to make raid bosses in MMOs unbeatable.
