The new PS5 models are heating up the debate. Sony had reduced the cooling system, which didn’t please everyone. Now a YouTuber has examined the temperatures and cleared up some claims.
We from MeinMMO had already reported that Sony released a new PS5 model with smaller cooling.
So far, users have mainly discussed the sense of the changes, and there were no solid facts. Many rejected the smaller cooling and suspected that the PS5 would have to become louder and hotter, which users would not benefit from. YouTubers like Austin Evans had rated the new model as worse than the previous model.
This is what has happened: Aris Mpitziopoulos, the founder of the power supply company Cybenetics, has now taken a look at the new PS5 model and compared it with the previous model. He not only looked at the components but also professionally examined the console. Aris writes among other things for the magazine Techpowerup and has a good understanding of the technology.
He presents his comparison of the old and new model in a video on YouTube and also explains his approach. We have embedded the video here for you:
PS5: The overall temperatures of the new model are lower
How high are the temperatures? To read the temperatures, Aris placed sensors on the corresponding components. His first result is that the temperatures in the new model are significantly lower.
The temperature sensor placed near the motherboard shows 51.2 degrees Celsius in the older model and 40.1 degrees Celsius in the new one. That is 10 degrees Celsius less.
However, the exhaust that the console pushes out is warmer in the new console. This confirms the suspicion that the new cooling system operates significantly more efficiently than the previous model.
However, he found higher temperatures in the RAM. In the old model, the GDDR6 memory gets to 40.9 degrees Celsius, while in the new model the memory temperatures rise to 48.2 degrees Celsius.
What else did he find? Aris notes at least that the volume of the console is slightly higher. Here he suspects that this must be because the smaller heat sink offers less resistance and thus more air is pushed out of the console.
However, the power consumption is identical in both consoles. At least he could not determine an increased power consumption.
How do I know which model I have? You can recognize which device you own by the model number of the console. This is printed, for example, on the original packaging:
- The older devices with and without a drive are called CFI-10xxA and CFI-10xxB.
- The newer devices with and without a drive are called CFI-11xxA and CFI-11xxB.
So far, however, it is unlikely that you have bought a new model in Germany. According to various users, the new model has so far only appeared in Japan and Australia.
There had already been early rumors in spring about a new PS5 model. However, Sony seems to have only made a minor change that probably the fewest users noticed:
