You install a lot of software but don’t worry about cleaning up? A YouTuber tried out what happens when you really clutter up your system. This should at least show you why good system hygiene can be quite helpful.
Some of you probably know this. Your best friend or an acquaintance complains that the computer isn’t working properly or is very slow. After a quick inspection, it turns out that the person has installed several antivirus programs, cleaning software, and other stuff that consumes a lot of resources.
However, a YouTuber has taken it to the extreme. He wanted to find out how much unnecessary software you need to install until gaming becomes impossible or at least very difficult.
YouTuber tests: How much performance do RGB, antivirus, and co consume?
Who conducted the test? The YouTuber Dawid Does Tech Stuff regularly tests serious and funny things on his channel. For example, he once bought a gaming PC from Aliexpress to find out how good such a device really is.
In his latest test, he installed a lot of software on his PC to find out when his gaming PC starts to struggle. We’ve embedded his YouTube video here for you:
What did he install? In his test, he downloaded a lot of software from various providers with different purposes. The “highlights” include:
- 12 antivirus programs
- 19 RGB software suites
- a lot of pre-installed Dell software
- 7 PC-cleaner software suites
- 7 different browsers
What had the least impact? In his first test, he only installed all the RGB software suites from various manufacturers such as Razer, Corsair, Logitech, and co. He explains here that these have little impact on performance, even though he installed 19 of them.
What has the most impact on performance? The PC really struggles under load as soon as he installs the 12 antivirus programs. Because they all require processing power and memory. The other programs and even his game for the benchmarks start to slow down, and loading times increase.
When does the computer stop working? In the end, he installed dozens of programs that all obediently boot with the startup. Boot times get longer and more and more apps crash on his computer. “Shadow of the Tomb Raider,” which he uses for benchmarks, takes more than 30 minutes to start the game. Normal working or gaming is no longer really possible.
Too many cooks spoil the broth on your PC as well
What can be learned from the test? Basically, you should regularly check how many programs you have installed on your computer and how many resources they require.
A quick glance in the task manager often helps here under Windows 10. In the task manager, switch to the “Startup” tab and you can immediately see what all boots with your computer. Simply put: The more programs in the startup, the longer your computer takes.
It is also helpful to regularly clean up your computer:
- If you have bought a new mouse from a different manufacturer, you can uninstall the old software suite if you no longer have any hardware from that manufacturer or remove it from startup.
- You don’t need more than one antivirus program. Multiple ones compete with each other and block each other. Many even believe that the normal Windows Defender is sufficient for general use.
If you are even considering upgrading your gaming PC, then there are certain things you should not buy. MeinMMO explains to you which “upgrades” you should stay away from:
