The YouTuber Linus Sebastian from Linus Tech Tips has had an Xbox controller made from pure gold. This is said to not only be the most expensive of its kind, but it also weighs significantly more than “normal” controllers. Many of you might find it too heavy for gaming.
What it’s about: After trying his hand at an IKEA furniture gaming bed A project, he has now taken on a new project. Linus is the head of Linus Tech Tips.
His latest project is an Xbox controller made of pure gold. After a long planning phase, the controller is finally finished, and the YouTuber presents the result in the video.
What kind of controller is this? The device has a material value of over 87,000 Canadian dollars (approximately 57,740 euros). The manufacturing process probably cost quite a bit as well. It was made by the company “Expert Castings.”
Almost all parts of the controller are made of gold, with exceptions being the circuit board, thumb sticks, buttons, and battery. This is the new Xbox Series X controller.
However, anyone who watches the roughly 12-minute video will quickly realize that the golden controller is not suitable for general gaming use.
We have embedded the English video from Linus Tech Tips here for you:
Gold Xbox Controller is likely of little interest to gamers
In theory, a gold Xbox controller sounds like a great thing. But for anyone who wants to game actively and does not want to just display the controller in a showcase, it is likely to be of little interest.
Because the controller has two “problems”:
The gold controller weighs 5 times as much as a normal controller
What’s inside the controller: The device contains 1.5 kilograms of gold. In addition, there is the weight of the electronics of the controller, such as the circuit board and battery. The controller is therefore significantly heavier than a conventional controller.
How much do other controllers weigh? None of the commercially available controllers for the Xbox weigh over 1 kilogram.
- The regular Xbox controller of the new Xbox Series X|S weighs 280 grams, making it about one-fifth the weight of the gold controller.
- The Xbox Elite Controller, which many professionals use, weighs 345 grams (according to Microsoft.com).
- The Scuf Prestige Xbox Controller weighs 267 grams, making it the lightest controller we compare here.
If you’re still looking for a good Xbox controller for your PC or console, we present you the best controllers you can buy:
“The most expensive Xbox controller in the world” is very delicate
That’s why you need to take care with the controller: The front plate, where the thumb sticks and buttons are embedded, is reportedly very delicate. As you can see in the video, Linus and other users only use the controller with gloves to protect the material.
If you enjoy gaming actively and tend to take out your frustration over a lost game on your controller, then you are unlikely to find much joy with the golden Xbox controller.
This is the controller’s biggest problem: Linus explains in the video multiple times that all important connection parts are made of metal. As a result, there will be significant wear and tear over time when removing parts such as the battery compartment.

Consoles and controllers made of gold already exist
Several manufacturers have already come up with the idea of making devices from gold. They produce consoles and other devices made of gold.
- At the luxury brand Caviar Royal Gifts, you can buy a PS5 for 1.5 million euros.
- In comparison, a Nintendo Wii Supreme made of gold is significantly cheaper at 433,000 US dollars (via Wealthygorilla.com).
Anyone who still wants a gold console does not need to invest 433,000 US dollars. The company Truly Exquisite already sells you a PS5 console for just 9,000 US dollars. If that’s not a bargain compared to the luxury console and Linus’s new controller.
