The 18-year-old Darrell “IShowSpeed” Watkins has a talent for getting himself into unusual situations that often end in loud screams. With this content, the streamer has been skyrocketing on YouTube for some time. Now he wanted to pretend to his viewers that he was making an expensive purchase, but it backfired.
What kind of YouTuber is he? IShowSpeed has been skyrocketing on YouTube since mid-2021. He repeatedly stands out for his impulsiveness and his seemingly reckless actions:
- The fire department had to respond after he set off fireworks in his room
- While talking to a soccer player from FC Bayern Munich, he accidentally revealed his number
- A prank call to the police ended in the streamer’s alleged arrest
For the viewers, it is never entirely clear to what extent these are staged scenarios with which the 18-year-old markets himself or rather youthful folly. However, the fact is that IShowSpeed resonates with his actions: In 2022, no streamer was more successful on YouTube.
IShowSpeed has been banned from Twitch since 2021. Similarly, DrDisrespect, who is now also successful on YouTube, has faced a similar situation.
Streamer tries to trick his viewers, but it goes wrong
What has he done now? In a recent stream, IShowSpeed was on the platform Roblox and was looking at expensive items. He encouraged his viewers to send him the rarest items.
A fan baited the streamer with a special hat: the “Midnight Blue Sparkle Time Fedora” for 14 million Robux, which currently corresponds to about 143,000 euros (as of May 24, 2023).
The 18-year-old probably thought it would be funny to make his viewers believe that he would actually buy the hat, only to back out at the last moment. At that point, he still had a little over 19 million Robux in his account.
Apparently, the streamer did not realize that after the question of whether one wanted to buy the item, there wouldn’t be an additional confirmation asking whether one was really sure. Instead, a message appeared on his screen confirming his successful purchase.

How did the streamer react? His first reaction was several loud “No” shouts, followed by “I need to get a refund!” After much fuss, the streamer finally explains that he thought the site would ask for confirmation again.
In the meantime, he seems to be near tears.
Is the money gone? Yes, because there is currently no option for a refund on Roblox (via Roblox). The streamer only has the option to resell the hat. However, as he must realize immediately after his purchase, the fedora typically sells for only 4 million Robux.
Additionally, Roblox retains about 30% of the sale amount – IShowSpeed would therefore have to sell the hat for more than 20 million Robux to recover his loss.
Why is the hat so expensive? To the uninitiated, this may seem like an absurdly high amount for a digital hat. However, the fedoras from the “Sparkle Time” series are strictly limited and are sold for thousands of euros due to their exclusivity.
The blue hat that IShowSpeed inadvertently purchased is the fifth from the “Sparkle Time” series and is limited to 100 pieces. Even more expensive are the items from the “Dominus” series: One of the hoods was sold for 200 million Robux in December 2022, setting the record for the most expensive purchase in Roblox.
The prices in Roblox are thus quite comparable to the amounts that collectors spend on rare skins in CS:GO.
