What’s new? Sony published a post on their PlayStation blog today, August 3, 2020. It specifically discusses the compatibility of PS4 peripherals with the new PlayStation 5. However, there was tough news right away for fans of the DualShock 4.
Your beloved controller, with which you have played PS4 games for several years, is now outdated. It will no longer work with new games for the PlayStation 5.
Say goodbye to the PS4 controller in PS5 games
This is what Sony says: The developers clearly state in the blog: No, the DualShock 4 is not compatible with PS5 games. You will have to use the new PS5 controller.
And the team also provides an explanation for gamers. They write:
Is the DualShock 4 compatible with PS5 games?
No, we believe that for PS5 games, you should take advantage of the new features and capabilities we provide on the platform, including the features of the DualSense Wireless Controller.

This does not mean that your PS4 controller will be completely useless on the PlayStation 5. Because Sony also reports on other use cases.
The DualShock 4 controller and the PlayStation-licensed gamepad controllers from third parties are compatible with supported PS4 games.
You won’t have to completely put your beloved PS4 controller away. It will just have to watch from a distance when it comes to new games, as your hands wrap around the new PS5 controller.

Which PS4 peripherals still work? The good news for you is that you don’t have to put away everything related to controlling your PS4.

Which PS4 peripherals/accessories are compatible with PS5?
Special peripherals such as officially licensed steering wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks are compatible with PS5 games and supported PS4 games.
The Platinum and Gold Edition wireless headsets as well as third-party headsets that connect via USB or audio jack are compatible with PS5 (but not the headset companion app).
Both the PS Move motion controller and the PlayStation VR aim controller are compatible with supported PS VR games on PS5.
