Blizzard announced Overwatch 2 officially at Blizzcon 2019. A new cinematic trailer showcases initial footage of the upcoming game.
What is Overwatch 2? Overwatch 2 will be a sequel to Overwatch (1) for PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch.
It is set to continue the game itself but will feature heroes and maps from Overwatch. Overwatch head Jeff Kaplan mentioned that no one should be left behind.
Additionally, all progress and cosmetics from Overwatch are set to carry over to Overwatch 2, contrary to a previous leak.
Kaplan also revealed that players of Overwatch and Overwatch 2 can apparently play together and share maps and heroes.

What does the trailer show? In the trailer, Mei, Tracer, and Winston are seen heading to Paris on a transport ship. An invasion by Null Sector, the “evil Omnics”, is currently underway.
The trio attempts to help the civilian population, but a giant Omnic mech appears, destroys the ship, and severely injures Mei. Subsequently, Winston apparently sacrifices himself to hold off the giant and the Omnics so everyone can escape.
Eventually, Genji comes to his aid in the form of a cloaked ninja, and even Reinhardt and Brigitte appear. They are followed by Mercy and the presumably new hero Echo.
Finally, the heroes combine their abilities to protect themselves with shields and use a pulse bomb and Mei’s cryo-pack to create a bomb that freezes the giant mech.
Here’s what the gameplay looks like: In a second trailer, Blizzard showcases the first gameplay. It shows countless Omnics overrunning cities, being fought off by the known heroes of Overwatch. This already hints at some of the features for Overwatch 2:
- Story and hero missions for cooperative gameplay
- Level system for heroes
- Customization options for abilities
- New maps, new look, and new PvP modes
The individual rounds and sessions seem to take place in global “watchpoints” that are partially already available as maps in Overwatch (1).
A new hero for Overwatch 2 has also been introduced, who was previously speculated from a leak for Overwatch (1): Sojourn.
When is Overwatch 2 coming out? So far, no release date for Overwatch 2 is known. However, the first missions and maps were already playable at Blizzcon.
