A player reports that gaming has been her big hobby since she was a child. Now she has decided, she tells on reddit, to treat herself to a new gaming PC. She invested quite a bit of money to ensure that she has at least the next 4 or 5 years of peace before she has to spend more money on her PC. In the end, she chose a gaming PC with Ryzen 7 7800x3D and an RTX 4090.
Why does she feel guilty? She explains that she somehow feels guilty. Because 4,000 euros is a lot of money for a student like her, and with that money, one could do many other things. For example, invest in a car or finance a mortgage. She herself says (via reddit):

Must she regret the purchase? Many gamers disagree with her. She says herself that she earned the money and did not take on any debts for the gaming PC. Therefore, she should not worry about having bought the gaming PC. After all, there are no big debts to repay now.
This is a major problem for Generation Z, which has spent a lot of money on credit in recent years and taken on high debts.
What alternatives are there? Some users say that she does not need to invest 4,000 euros in a gaming PC, but could build a nearly equally good PC for half the price. The problem is also, adds another, that people have a completely false understanding of hardware (via reddit.com): It doesn’t always have to be the fastest, best, and most expensive product on the market to keep up. Often, hardware that is only slightly worse is almost as powerful or is completely sufficient for the average gamer.
Hardware prices are still high, but not as bad as in 2022
How bad are the current prices? PC gaming or gaming in general has become very expensive in recent weeks and months. This is primarily because there is little supply in the entry-level and mid-range segment.
While you could previously pay between 150 and 200 euros for a good graphics card, you are now looking at more like 250 to 300 euros for a good entry-level GPU.
How bad was it before? From 2020 to 2022, prices in the hardware sector were significantly higher than today, and this had various reasons:
- Due to the Corona pandemic, production capacities in Asia decreased, and significantly fewer chips were produced. As a result, fewer graphics cards landed on the market. The limited available products were snatched up by scalpers.
- In March 2021, the “Ever Given” ran aground in the Suez Canal. This caused delays in goods, and prices also increased.
- With the strong boom in cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, prices for graphics cards surged rapidly.
At times, you had to pay several thousand euros for a graphics card. We don’t even want to start on the scarcity of the PS5. But those times are over for now, and hopefully, they will stay that way.
