In Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War some players are annoyed that they seemingly hit nothing and their bullets drift through the air like in slow motion. Is it a bug or is it intended? Find out here at MeinMMO.
What’s the deal with the shooting behavior? In the multiplayer of Cold War you may have noticed that with some weapons, something seems off with hit registration. Especially with submachine guns (SMGs), it occurs that you fight at medium range, take aim at the enemy, shoot, and somehow your bullets go wide.
This may seem at first glance like a nasty bug, but it is actually an intentional “feature” that the developers are using to balance certain weapon classes in an unorthodox way.
Developers “balance” weapons with low bullet velocity
This is behind the “problem”: A look at the weapon stats quickly reveals where the issue lies. It is not an unwanted bug, but an intentional feature by the developers.
Since SMGs were likely too strong in the earlier testing phases of Cold War, they were adjusted downward in their stats to balance them against assault rifles, for example. The main adjustment made here was probably in bullet velocity.
This is generally lower in Cold War than in previous CoD games, and it is particularly noticeable with SMGs. Since your bullets fly relatively slowly and there is also a noticeable bullet drop at medium range, it becomes harder to hit anything with these weapons.
While this may serve the balance of the weapons, the strange and unusual shooting behavior of the SMGs makes players, according to the embedded YouTubers Drift0r and TheXclusiveAce, more confused and think essentially “My weapon is acting up!” rather than “Ah, the weapon shoots oddly because otherwise the balancing wouldn’t fit.”
Bullet velocity is the most important stat in CoD Cold War
How can you improve bullet velocity? According to the two YouTubers, there is a stat in Cold War that should definitely be prioritized in the gunsmith: bullet velocity.
Because certain barrels for your guns provide bonuses of up to 100 percent on bullet velocity. This makes the SMGs finally playable again without feeling like the weapon is somehow buggy.

Whereas in earlier CoD games, the weapon’s range was mainly decisive and was preferred to be boosted, in Cold War you should always focus on weapon attachments that provide a bonus to bullet velocity.
This also applies when you have a hybrid solution available that, for example, increases range, damage, and bullet velocity a bit. Focus more on bullet velocity, as you’ll have the best effect according to Drift0r.
A good setup for the M16 can be found here:
Bullet velocity is not only for SMGs: While SMGs clearly benefit the most from improved bullet velocity, every weapon in the game is well advised to have a boost to this stat.
According to Drift0r, sniper rifles turn into quasi hitscan weapons, meaning guns with which you basically have an immediate hit as soon as you pull the trigger. So if you have the choice of which upgrades to put on your favorite weapons, always choose those with more bullet velocity!
