How does it work in Japan? In Japan, the Switch 2 is being sold through a kind of lottery: You sign up for the purchase and hope that you can order a Switch 2 at the shop. Those who do not receive a “lot” cannot order a console. This is reminiscent of practices used against scalpers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This is what the Nintendo president says now: Furukawa stated that they had received an “extremely high number of applications” for the Switch 2, greatly exceeding the target number. The English magazine Dexerto reports this. Furukawa commented on this problem on April 23, 2025, on X and explained (via x.com):
We have received an extremely high number of applications, about 2.2 million people just in Japan. However, this number far exceeds our expectations and far exceeds the number of Nintendo Switch 2 consoles that can be delivered via the My Nintendo Store on June 5.
The Nintendo president further explained that “they unfortunately anticipate that a significant number of customers will not be selected when the winners are announced tomorrow, April 24.”
After the first drawing round, there will be a second round. But Furukawa added that there is no guarantee that all customers will be able to pre-order the console.
