In New World, the winter event is running until early January. And this is ideal for increasing your expertise for endgame gear and quickly earning coins. MeinMMO editor Alexander Leitsch is convinced that playing right now is really worth it – especially because you only need to invest a few minutes
Update January 8: The winter event has been extended until January 25. So you have a little more time to make money from it and increase your expertise.
What is currently happening in New World? With the big December patch, the endgame content has been revised. This primarily affected the loot and gear system. Since then, you can see exactly how high your expertise is and can raise it much more targeted. Expertise is an important value in endgame, which we will explain in more detail.
Expertise can be easily increased through the winter event in New World. Because within a few minutes and with almost no effort, you can gain between 2 and 5 levels. All other methods cost you at least 30 minutes or are luck-based, which can be annoying.
Additionally, there are 300 free coins to be earned daily, which you should not miss.
This makes the winter event an ideal time to play New World again.
Increase expertise and earn coins – Here’s how
What makes the event so lucrative? In short: Diamond Gypsum. This is a new material that you get when you interact with a tree of light. These are found in old settlements in the territories that players can also conquer.
You can earn 3 Diamond Gypsum daily. To do this, you need to interact with three different trees. For these first three uses per day, you will also receive 100 coins each, which totals 300 coins.
After the three uses, you can interact with other trees in different settlements, but these two rewards will then disappear.
The only requirement for the coins is level 15 and for Gypsum level 60.
What do I do with the Gypsum? You can smelt 3 Diamond Gypsum into a Gypsum Orb at a gypsum furnace. The furnaces are located in all cities of the areas where territories cannot be conquered – such as Deep Gorge or Bruchberg.
A Gypsum Orb can then be used for any equipment slot to increase the expertise by 2 to 5.

What exactly is expertise? Expertise indicates the value of the highest gear that has been dropped for you, and it also plays an important role for future drops.
Because whenever you receive a piece of equipment that has the same or a lower value than your expertise, your chance of getting a better item automatically increases:
- You always start with a 1% chance for a better drop
- For every lower drop, this chance increases by 0.1%
- After 990 drops, you have a chance of almost 100% for a better drop. This luck applies to drops from both enemies and chests.
At level 60, it is automatically 500 and can be increased up to a maximum of 590. At level 590, you will then always have a chance for an item with the maximum armor value of 600 to be dropped.
Why is expertise still important? A patch is supposed to come in 2022 that will allow your equipment value to be influenced by expertise. The values are supposed to meet exactly in the middle:
- If you have an expertise of 520 and buy armor at the trading post with the perfect value of 600, you effectively use only an equipment value of 560. The item will thus be downscaled until you increase your expertise.
- You will have to grind your expertise up in the long run.
- Only items that you craft yourself are excluded.
The winter event grants you expertise, coins and also brings XP to low-level characters
Why should I play the winter event now? If you want to grind your expertise, you have to invest a lot of time:
- You can play about two rounds of outpost rush (about 45-60 minutes)
- You can run the hard endgame dungeons (with group searching and the run will take easily 30+ minutes)
- You can grind in the open world (15-60 minutes, but somewhat depends on luck with drops)
Or you can simply interact with 3 trees during the event, which will take hardly 3 minutes and will also give you 300 coins. And since expertise will become increasingly important in the long run, you should just invest those 3 minutes per day.
If you do not have a character at level 60, you can use the winter event quests and the new city quests to level up. The city quests are designed to be super easy and usually also let you raise your professions a bit.
If you are considering returning to New World in a few weeks or months when there is new content, you will regret not having simply visited the 3 trees of light each day. Because they give you a really strong push in terms of gear.
