One of the funniest moments of BlizzCon happened during a panel that most might have missed. The WoW voice actors were joking around…
At BlizzCon 2019, the focus was mainly on the newly announced games from Blizzard (such as Shadowlands), but there were also some particularly interesting details to hear and see during the various panels. The panel featuring the different voice actors for the important characters – such as Anduin, Sylvanas, and Saurfang – stood out in particular.
What happened? In the last minutes, some outtakes were played, where Thrall and Saurfang were having a conversation. It was apparently about rehearsals for the recordings of “Safe Home” and “The Reckoning”.
During that, there is a dialogue with improvisation that becomes very humorous. You should definitely listen in (starts at minute 11:40):
Saurfang: “You and I…”
Thrall: “… we can’t hide.”
Saurfang: “That’s true. If I… can spare these men, spare our families… then I will do it. That is my…”
Thrall: “… limitation?”
As you can hear from the laughter of the people in the recording, it was well received. The conversation then becomes a bit more absurd:
Saurfang: “I came here because of this madness, screw it! You see, I knew we shouldn’t have talked about it. I’ve thought about it.”
Thrall: “Let’s get a beer!”
Saurfang: “Okay. Let those damned idiots figure it out. Sylvanas! I’m pulling back. Have a nice day, see you, good night!”
This is only topped by the second scene:
Saurfang: “You know, Thrall, sometimes I think… I should have just let those two damned undead wipe you and your family out.
I walked 6 miles! Through damned grain! I’m gluten intolerant, damn it, you know that!”
Voice acting at Blizzard is special: What has been emphasized repeatedly is the fact that at Blizzard, voice acting is handled differently than in most other studios. Instead of standing alone or in pairs during a recording and simply reading the lines without much context, they take their time at Blizzard and bring the voice actors together.
They often perform little “role plays,” where they are supposed to behave just like the characters would. This results in funny dialogues and sometimes even really funny outtakes that drift into absurdity. They brought some of those to BlizzCon.
However, apart from these funny inserts, the panel with the voice actors was extremely exciting. They even reenacted two of the cinematics and spoke their now-famous lines. It even had a bit of theater atmosphere and brought a lot of cheers from the fans at BlizzCon.
Anyone who has purchased a Virtual Ticket should take another look at the “smaller” panels – it’s worth it.
