The Elder Scrolls Online has released a new expansion every year since 2017. We wanted to know from you which has been the best so far. And the result was surprisingly close.
On February 10th, we launched a survey asking you which of the previous ESO expansions was the best. Enough time has passed now for us to present the results.
Place 4 – Greymoor
With 19% of the votes, Greymoor lands in fourth and thus last place in the survey. However, the result is not bad as all expansions were quite close to each other.
Greymoor impressed many with its exciting story about vampires and the nostalgia of Skyrim. Special features included the antiquities, the new mythic gear, as well as a revision of vampire abilities.
However, there was also criticism since no new class or new skill line was introduced. This had always been the case with previous expansions.
For MeinMMO reader Muchtie, Greymoor was narrowly the favorite: “Hard to say but I liked Greymoor a bit more.”
Place 3 – Summerset
With 24% of the votes, Summerset takes 3rd place. The expansion was released in 2018 and was the second to be released for ESO.
Summerset especially impressed with the new Psijik Order and the beautiful look of the Summerset Islands.
However, there was criticism that players had to play the DLC Orsinium beforehand to fully dive into the story. The abilities from the Psijik Order were also perceived as rather mediocre.
MeinMMO user Fabian comments: “Clearly Summerset because of the great story and because it just looks very nice.”
Place 2 – Morrowind
27% of our readers cast their vote for Morrowind, the first addon released for ESO in 2017.
With Morrowind, the new Guardian class and PvP battlegrounds were introduced. Similar to Greymoor, nostalgia played a big role here as well. The adventure took players to Vvardenfell, a place many recognized from The Elder Scrolls III.
Although ESO had already restructured with the One Tamriel update, for many players who had turned their backs on the MMORPG after initial problems, Morrowind was the perfect time to give the game a second chance. This is also why the expansion stayed in many players’ memories.
However, MeinMMO editor Gerd Schuhmann criticized at the time that the expansion resembled a story DLC and offered too few special contents.
Place 1 – Elsweyr
With 30% of the votes, Elsweyr from 2019 wins our survey.
This expansion took players to southern regions, the homeland of the feline Khajiit. Additionally, for the first time, players encountered dragons in ESO and were introduced to a new class, the Necromancer. Elsweyr also received praise for its story.
MeinMMO reader Tharonil was also impressed by the graphics and the story: “For me, it was actually Elsweyr. At first, I thought nothing could surpass the beautiful green of Summerset. Especially not a desert landscape. But Elsweyr looks not only fantastic in color, the details of the buildings and their shapes fit perfectly into the environment. The oriental flair and beautiful stories round everything off. Especially in southern Elsweyr, the main story really grabbed me.”
Where will Blackwood rank? In summer 2021, the fifth expansion Blackwood will be released. It revolves around the Daedric Prince Mehrunes Dagon.
