In Destiny 2 Beyond Light, fans are currently enjoying a silly dialogue. However, the existence of these lines is the fault of the nasty Corona virus. Read here on MeinMMO what the Drifter-Ghost dialogue is about and why the plague plays a role.
What kind of dialogue is that? In the current expansion Beyond Light, you can steal an exotic grenade launcher called “Grip of Salvation.” The associated mission is offered to you by the Drifter, the mysterious wanderer who walks between Light and Darkness. You can find a guide to the grenade launcher here on MeinMMO:
In the original version of Destiny 2, the Drifter has a characteristic speech style reminiscent of a space cowboy. However, since the Drifter does not speak for himself in the mission, your helpful ghost handles the briefing. And that, although the Drifter previously mocked the ghost that he certainly could not communicate the thing sensibly to your Guardian.
But the ghost does not make it easy and intentionally imitates the Drifter in a half-hearted, lazy manner. You can hear the dialogue at the very beginning of this video:
The dialogue is well-received by Destiny 2 fans, and on reddit, they are already celebrating the lines with more than 1,700 upvotes and in 163 comments as the best dialogue in the Beyond Light expansion. However, there is a bigger story behind the dialogue.
Without Corona, the funny dialogue in Beyond Light wouldn’t exist
This is what’s behind the dialogue: In the reddit thread, a Bungie employee under the alias Gunmaster95 eventually chimed in and brought more information to light about the dialogue. The whole thing was actually a stopgap solution, as they couldn’t book the voice actor for the Drifter due to Corona:
Fun Fact: This actually happened because we were unable to book Drifter’s voice actor for this mission due to the complicated situation due to COVID. He was supposed to do the radio dialogue. One of our writers had the idea that Ghost should just pretend to be Drifter instead (since Mr. North [Nolan North, the voice of Ghost] was available) and wrote all these fantastic dialogues. Apparently, Nolan perfectly imitated Drifter right off the bat and had to be instructed to intentionally do it worse. The end result is some of my favorite dialogues from this release.
Gunmaster95
So they had to make Nolan North, the new voice of the Ghost, take over the part of the Drifter and ended up with a much better result than if everything had gone correctly from the start.
If you are still a big fan of the Drifter, you will certainly enjoy this article: There the Vagabond says the word “thing” very often accompanied by the fox’s suffering. Check out the funny clip here on MeinMMO. Enjoy!
