Diablo 4 has a feature that some fans already consider the best in the game: You can pet dogs. However, a few players in the beta have found that it’s better to leave the animals alone. At least, if you care about them.
How can you pet dogs? In some cities in Diablo 4, dogs and cats roam around. You can pet them by approaching and simply greeting them with the “Hello” emote. How emotes work, is taught to you in the quest “Lifting the Mood”. Here is the quick guide:
- Approach the animal
- Open the action wheel (E on PC, Up on the D-pad on PlayStation and Xbox)
- Select the top option “Hello” in the middle menu
Your character then kneels in front of the dog or cat and pets the animal. Whether there will be pets later that accompany you and that you can pet is still unknown. At least you can carry a cute wolf puppy with you when you play the beta.
However, some players have found on Reddit that it is not necessarily good to pet dogs. Because the animals then become a bit too clingy.
You can find all information about the beta of Diablo 4 in our guide here. We have compiled the most important details in the video for you:
“You have to decide not to pet the dog. That is the real hell”
Why you should not pet dogs: The user SodiumArousal explains on Reddit that dogs will follow you for a certain time after you pet them. They then follow you around in the cities – and also outside.
If they follow you out of the city, it can become dangerous. They can be attacked by many enemies and usually die right after one hit. So you are directly responsible for the death of the animal if you pet it and then continue with the quests.
Players are partly joking about this, but more in fun. Being able to pet dogs, but not being allowed to, is the real hell. And one has failed if they take responsibility and then the dog dies.
Petting cats, by the way, should be quite safe. The rather stubborn animals just roll over on their backs and let you scratch their bellies, but then go on their way again.
If you want to have your own animal companion, you can earn a wolf puppy as a transmog in the closed beta and in the open beta. You just need to reach level 20. This is easier with our guide:
