The communication tool Discord has been a faithful companion for most PC gamers for years. Now you can finally use it on Sony’s consoles: the PS4 and PS5. However, not fully yet.
What is this tool? Discord is a mix between text and voice communication. On various servers, private or public, you can talk to other gamers or exchange pictures and more.
Text channels are available for chats and voice channels to play together. Many developers use Discord to keep the community updated with news and provide a point of contact. Discord is particularly easy because you can even use it without an application directly through the browser.
The software was released in 2015 and has since caught up with established players like TeamSpeak after initial criticism regarding data protection. Apps are now available for many other systems such as iOS and Android smartphones, Mac, and Linux.
What’s new now: Since January 31st, Discord can be used on PS4 and PS5 as leaked before. However, currently only the linking of the PSN account with Discord is available.
This means: you can display on Discord when you are playing a game on PlayStation. This is supposed to help find players who are playing the same game – especially in crossplay games.
If you still want to buy a PS5 but have had no luck, keep an eye on our ticker on MeinMMO:
Discord is on PS4 & PS5 – But without Voice
How do I connect my PSN with Discord? When starting Discord, you should already get a popup that indicates the linking. If you clicked it away, follow these steps:
- Open “Connections” under User Settings
- Click on the PlayStation symbol
- Authorize your PSN account in the new window
- Activate the new features in the PSN account
If you are unable to create a link yet, wait a few more days. According to Discord, the update will be rolled out “gradually.” So it may be that the feature will come to you later.
What comes next? The partnership between Discord and PlayStation is to be continued and they want to “explore how to create great shared experiences for friends and communities together.”
Whether voice features will come is still open – even though it would be the next logical step. Because voice chats are essential for many games:
That’s why voice chat in multiplayer games is so damn important
