According to insiders, you will finally be able to install an internal SSD in your PS5 starting summer 2021. Many users are already waiting for this possibility, as games are getting larger, taking up a lot of space, and the fast storage of the PS5 is limited.
What’s it about: From this summer, it should be possible to install an SSD in the PS5 and thus expand the console’s storage. At least, Bloomberg.com claims to have heard this from insiders at Sony. A future firmware update is expected to unlock the SSD slot of the PS5.
However, the insiders do not want to be named, as this is not official yet. Because storage expansion was not possible at the PS5’s release.
What we do not know yet: Currently (as of February 26, 2021), it is not known which SSDs will be supported by the PS5, nor how much the storage expansion will cost. Sony had previously stated that it plans to certify SSDs for the PS5.
In addition to the firmware update, we also have to wait for Sony to provide a list of SSDs that we can easily install in the next-gen console.
When will it be official? So far, we still have to be patient until Sony announces both the release of the update and possible SSDs for the PS5. If the unlocking occurs in summer, then an official statement should not be far behind. In this article, we will keep you updated on all questions regarding the SSD:
That’s why many gamers are waiting to expand the PS5 storage
That’s why it’s so interesting: The PS5 relies on a particularly fast internal SSD, which has already been praised by many before. Loading times are short and especially PS5 games benefit from the performance of the internal SSD.
However, the problem is that you can only install new PS5 games on the internal storage. If your storage is full, you have to delete games. Games like the Call of Duty series require more and more storage on the console.
How is the additional SSD installed? Previously, Sony had shown in a tear-down of the PS5 that installing a second SSD is not very difficult. You just need to remove the outer shell of the console to access the expansion slot directly.
Can I connect an external hard drive? In principle, although it is possible to connect an external hard drive to the PS5, you can only install PS4 games on it. There is also a similar restriction for the PS4 controller, with which you cannot play PS5 games.
Should I already buy an SSD for the PS5? No, because so far we do not know which SSDs are approved. Even Sony has advised against buying an SSD for the PS5.
