Millennia is currently free to play on Steam. The game is considered underrated by some players and a hidden gem alongside the major brand Civilization.
What kind of game is it? Millennia is a classic 4x strategy game and strongly resembles the popular Civilization series in terms of structure and design: at the start of the game, you choose a civilization and lead it through various ages into modern times, while directly competing with other civilizations that want to achieve the same goals.

How has the game performed in the last months? Millennia was released on March 26, 2024, about 6 months ago. Initially, the game struggled with technical issues. Players complained about problems, its unfinished state, and weak graphics.
As of now (November 16, 2024), the overall ratings for the 4X strategy game are only balanced. 68% of about 2,500 reviews rate the game positively. Of the approximately 40 recent reviews, a remarkable 84% are positive.
Who is behind Millennia? The game is developed by a new studio, C Prompt, which consists of renowned developers who have worked on games like Age of Empires II, System Shock 2, or Starcraft. The publisher behind the game is the well-known Swedish company Paradox.
Is the game worth it? MyMMO editor Gerd Schuhmann has thoroughly played Millennia. After over 100 hours in Millennia, he explains that he genuinely likes the game: it brings many original ideas and is more of a city-building simulation than a true Civilization.
Millennia also has a “remarkably satisfying learning curve”: it even offers pleasant surprises, as new challenges arise with each age. It is, however, not significantly easier than the major competitor Civilization.
If you have had the game on your wishlist for a while, you should give it a chance during the free phase. Because it costs nothing until Monday.
Schuhmann has also tried Ara: History Untold, the supposed Civilization killer. However, his conclusion here is significantly weaker. He has now spent 40 hours in this game, but it does not really convince him: I spent 40 hours in 3 days with the new strategy game on Steam – but I can’t recommend it to anyone
