It is currently strange with World of Warcraft. Those who gifted friends a game can now reclaim it without their knowledge – and troll hard.
It is currently a strange situation with World of Warcraft. Since the next expansion Shadowlands has been postponed indefinitely, Blizzard is currently offering refunds. Those unhappy with the delay can get their money back, but will also lose any bonuses received and therefore access to characters.
But there is a catch: You can also get refunds for gifts that you have given to friends.
What is it about? Through the Battle.net shop, it is possible to make players on the friends list happy. Those who are generous can gift games like WoW: Shadowlands to friends. They then receive the game as a gift credited to their account.
The problem: The gifting friends can now, weeks or even months after the gifting, undo it. The purchased Shadowlands can be canceled, causing the friend to lose the game again.
Why is this? The reason for this is likely due to the legal provisions in some countries. Making a refund not possible after a promoted release date has not been met is likely to cause problems especially in Europe. Since the “gifters” in this scenario are also the buyers, they must be granted the opportunity for a return – even if they digitally handed over the game directly as a gift.
An absurd situation that only works in the digital space. That this is the case was confirmed by a Game Master. A player had Shadowlands taken away in exactly this way.
What are the consequences? The consequences for the recipient are obvious. On the one hand, they no longer have a copy of Shadowlands and will not be able to play the expansion at release. If the gifted version also included a character boost or other bonuses, these will also be removed. A boosted character can thus become unplayable and requires a new boost to be usable again.
Not to mention that you will appear as a bad friend if you “reclaim” once gifted games in this way. But you probably already know that.
The simplest solution in this case would be to buy the formerly gifted game version yourself, so that the previous state can be restored.
