Do you call the lowest button on the PS4 controller “X button”, “cross button” or something else entirely? PlayStation has now provided an official answer as to what this button is called.
Discussions about the button names: Since I held my first PlayStation controller as a child, I have called the four right colorful buttons X (like the letter), Circle, Square, and Triangle. Back then, I fought with my friends about what these buttons are really called. One constantly called X cross, another claimed that Square was called Quadrat. And yet another one didn’t care about the shapes at all, referring only to “the red button” or “the blue button”.
Even though this discussion is as old as the PlayStation itself, the PS4 community still hasn’t agreed on uniform names after all these years.
This was recently highlighted in a discussion on Twitter initiated by user drip133. He simply asked: “Do you say X or cross button?” and showed a picture of a PS4 controller. This survey became quite large due to the creative comments that received tens of thousands of upvotes and retweets, like this one:
The majority of users in the comments are firmly convinced that it is called the X button. Nobody calls the button cross button (cross button). “Are there really people who call it cross? I don’t understand that,” writes one user. However, there are also players who take sides for “cross” or bring up other naming options, like “the blue one”.
PlayStation brings clarity to the discussions
This is the official designation: As this discussion got quite big and people were debating passionately, the official Twitter account of PlayStation UK took notice.
According to PlayStation, the buttons on the PS controller are called:
- Triangle – (Dreieck)
- Circle – (Kreis)
- Cross – (Kreuz)
- Square – (Quadrat, but also Viereck)
