Yesterday a new Exotic arrived in Destiny 2, but it is still a secret [Update]

With the update 2.0.4 for Destiny 2, not only did the Festival of the Lost start – apparently Bungie also introduced a new Exotic weapon with the patch. Fans are now speculating about which weapon it could be.

The Exotic is a new Power weapon that is still listed as unknown in the collection. There is currently no official information from Bungie. However, fans have their own theories already.

Is the Thunderlord returning in the Festival of the Lost?

This is what fans suspect: The most widely spread theory at the moment is that this exotic weapon, which came into play with the update 2.0.4, is part of the Halloween event Festival of the Lost, which started on October 16 in Destiny 2.

Bungie has already announced that a special quest will await at the end of these festivities, which involves solving a mysterious murder case surrounding the former Reef Cryptarch Master Ives. Fans now suspect that the secret weapon Exotic could be the reward at the end of this quest line.

Many Guardians are going a step further. They assume that this item could be the exotic heavy machine gun Thunderlord from Destiny 1.

What do fans base their theory on? Many fans are sure that the Thunderlord will return. Bungie itself teased the return of the heavy MGs with a short clip, in which the Thunderlord was most likely seen.

Recently, there was also a series of alleged leaks on Reddit talking about the return of three popular exotic weapons. One of them claims that the Thunderlord will return during the Festival of the Lost – even though the MGs are officially not supposed to return until December.

The author of the leak has proven to be a reliable source multiple times in the past. Now many Guardians suspect that Bungie might introduce the Thunderlord as a sort of teaser for the heavy MGs in winter, to get fans excited early on.

UPDATE: The hints about the Thunderlord are becoming more numerous. A data miner has now found in the game files in-game icons for the exotic machine gun including two ornaments. He recently shared this on Reddit.

Is the Thunderlord located at an old Destiny 1 location? The theory is even further pursued by some fans. Data miners have found in the new data added to the game with update 2.0.4, audio files from Amanda Holiday, which suggest that Guardians may have to go to the Cosmodrome on Earth at some point.

Some now suspect that it might be possible to obtain the Thunderlord there since Bungie first presented this heavy MG to the public right there before the launch of Destiny 1. You can see the scene in the following video starting at 7:05.

How plausible is this theory?  So far, all of these fans’ thoughts are pure speculation. None of this has been officially confirmed yet. And just because a new secret Exotic has appeared in the database and in the game, does not necessarily mean that it is actually the Thunderlord or that the weapon is linked to the Festival of the Lost.

But the theory sounds plausible, especially in light of the Reddit leak. The timing also fits and gives the leak further momentum – especially since it would not be the first time that the author was right. The fact that even seemingly incredible theories can ultimately turn out to be true was shown by the massive leak shortly before the Forsaken release.

But soon there should be final clarity on whether there is any truth to the rumors. Because the mysterious quest at the Festival of the Lost starts on October 30.
