The beloved single-player RPG Final Fantasy VII is getting another spin-off. It is a battle royale game for mobile devices called The First Soldier (iOS/Android).
This is FFVII The First Soldier: Yesterday, on February 25th, Square Enix announced that one of its most popular RPGs is receiving a new spin-off. FFVII The First Soldier is a free-to-play battle royale game for Android and iOS that takes place in the universe of Final Fantasy VII.
The story of the game is set 30 years before the events of the original FFVII. In order to increase their military strength, Shinra begins testing the SOLDIER project: Where humans enhanced by Mako technology will fight against each other.
The game is supposed to provide background on how the notorious elite fighters of SOLDIER were selected. After all, they play a central role throughout the entire FFVII series. You can watch the reveal trailer here:
A Battle Royale with lots of Final Fantasy
This is how the battle royale will play: In the trailer, you can directly see first gameplay of The First Soldier. At first glance, it resembles games like Fortnite. The goal is to eliminate all opponents and become the first Soldier ever.
Players can use both different types of firearms and melee weapons like swords or engage in direct fist fights. The mobile game also features Final Fantasy elements.
- Players have a MP gauge in addition to HP.
- You can set and use different spells. These include attack spells like Fire and Ice, support spells like Protect, or healing spells like Heal.
- The locations are all from FFVII. You fight in the slums of Midgar, Aerith’s church, or Wutai.
- There are even summons that you can unleash on your opponents. In the trailer, you can see Ifrit in action, for example.
- On the battlefield, you can collect potions and ethers to regenerate your HP and MP.
- The Chocobos are, of course, also included and can be used as mounts.
There are also PvE elements. You fight not only against other players but also against classic Final Fantasy monsters. In the trailer, you can see Bombers or the iconic Wax Scorpion boss, for example.
When will FFVII The First Soldier be released? The exact release date is not yet known. At the end of the trailer, it simply says that it will be released in 2021.
The game is supposed to be released worldwide on Android and iOS devices. This means that we in Europe will also get to enjoy the FFVII battle royale.
Will The First Soldier cost anything? The game will be completely free-to-play with an in-game shop. From the trailer, it can be inferred that the shop will offer cosmetic items such as Chocobo costumes.
Whether there will also be gameplay-relevant items in the shop is not yet known.
