It almost didn’t happen: Baldur’s Gate 3.
By now, the success of Baldur’s Gate should be known to everyone. If you want to play a really good, modern RPG, you just can’t miss Baldur’s Gate 3. However, not many people know that we might not have seen the game at all. The head of Larian, Swen Vincke, almost left the industry.
The reason: Publishers were really getting on his nerves.
What happened? In an interview with PC Gamer, the CEO of Larian, Swen Vincke, spoke about the development of the game and the previous titles. While some were indeed successful, others were not. Divinity 2: Ego Draconis was supposed to be a major breakthrough, but that didn’t happen. There were several reasons for this.
It was really the result of us being too ambitious with a too small team that didn’t have enough resources, and then the publisher wanted us to release it even though it wasn’t finished.
That was the moment when Vincke “thought about just quitting.”
What happened next? As we all know, that wasn’t the end for Larian. However, the company changed its course.
You can’t just go from mistake to mistake. You have to do it right. That is the known moment when I parted ways with publishers.
Without major publishers behind them, things still went uphill for Larian. Since they took everything upon themselves, they had much more control. And through crowdfunding campaigns, they could also remain largely independent. This ultimately led to Baldur’s Gate 3 – and thus the greatest success the studio has ever had. Without any publisher.
Which publisher was involved? It is difficult to find out exactly which publisher is being referred to in the allegations. Larian’s games were marketed by different publishers in various countries. Therefore, it is not clear who Vincke means – or does not mean.
What is clear, however, is that Vincke drew consequences from this with Larian. From then on, they no longer relied on publishers and just took everything into their own hands. They became more independent and financed games – including Baldur’s Gate 3 – through crowdfunding. The masterpiece that eventually came out justifies Larian and Vincke more than ever. It would have been a shame if we hadn’t gotten to see such rare endings like the Raphael ending.
