Those who have been following Destiny since its release in 2014 know that the Guardians are still wandering within the Solar System and have never explored the vastness of space beyond the known system. However, with Year 11, this could change.
The Solar System is a prison: In Destiny 1 and 2, Guardians are currently only operating within the Solar System – that is, the solar system containing the planets we know: Earth, Venus, Mars, and more. However, technological advancements should allow the Guardians to travel much further to explore distant systems and unknown planets.
While this may be true in theory, the reality is different. For the past 10 years, Guardians have been trapped in the Solar System, despite the lore of Destiny 1 and 2 mentioning many places that could be explored. However, new information regarding Year 11 was revealed during an interview with Bungie, and this might please the explorers among you.
“We want to expand our worlds again”
What does Bungie have planned? The British video game magazine Edge conducted an interview with Robbie Stevens (Game Director of Destiny 2). This not only discussed Year 10 but also Year 11 and what is to follow. When talking about what should come after the current episodes, Robbie Stevens revealed the following:
All the content coming in Year 10 is the catalyst for what happens next in Destiny 2. And some of these storylines will continue into the future. But what I really want to emphasize here is that we are moving away from the linear narrative […] of Destiny 2 and transitioning to these more standalone experiences and episodes that can be more easily accessed and embraced. So you don’t have to know everything that happened immediately before to enjoy the story and the experience.
Many of the thoughts about Year 11 and how we really embark on the next journey after these episodes will also be based on these ideas. Because we have been doing this linear thing for a while now, and we want to expand our worlds and world-building again, to broaden the Destiny universe as a whole.

How exactly the Game Director means this is not known, and no examples were given to reveal how large these “expansions” will be. With the victory against the Witness, the Darkness has been temporarily banished and Guardians should finally be able to explore vast systems – but which ones could play a role? We have some ideas.
Which places could be added? The lore of Destiny offers many options when it comes to new destination locations. Places that Bungie could consider, for example, could be:
- The homeworld of the Hive
- The homeworld of the Cabal
- The homeworld of the Fallen
- The pocket dimension of the Awoken
- The ice planet where the Wanderer and his crew were trapped
Moreover, there are still many opportunities for exploration in the Solar System. Old Chicago on Earth or Pluto have not yet been explored.
