A keyboard control for Xbox One is on the horizon. However, comprehensive mouse support will take longer.
As part of the Build Event 2017, Microsoft’s Senior Program Manager Andrew Parson confirmed that development studios would soon have more freedom in creating “Xbox One” games. The ability to integrate keyboard support for One games is on the way.
This is set to be realized with an update for the Xbox Live Creators Program. This program allows social features of Xbox Live to be integrated into the game with minimal developer effort, such as leaderboards, game hubs, or sign-in options. And soon, keyboard support will be added.
Developers are interested in keyboard support for Xbox
According to Parson, he has already spoken with two developers who expressed significant interest in keyboard support for console. They are looking to release games for Windows that they also want to port to Xbox. However, these games require the ability to input a lot of text.
While there are already chatpads for the controller, this pad cannot replace the experience of a real keyboard. Therefore, Parson stated, a full keyboard support for apps and games on Xbox One will follow soon. When this is expected is not known.
The eternal discussion about PC and console controls
The decision lies with the developers whether they want to integrate this keyboard support into their game or not. Many players would certainly welcome it if this feature is omitted. After all, a control with mouse and keyboard has certain advantages over a controller control, especially in first-person shooters. With the mouse, it is easier to aim precisely and quickly target enemies.
If the “mouse and keyboard” control establishes itself, some fear that controller players will have clear disadvantages in PvP. One will be forced into this hardware to remain competitive. Therefore, developers must pay more attention to game balance when they implement this feature.
But before you dig out your mouse and keyboard to plug them into the console: While the keyboard is receiving full support, there are still significant limitations regarding the mouse, as Microsoft’s James Yarrow explains. One cannot yet rely on mouse support; only very few models will work. However, work is underway for support for all mice.
For PS4, there is an officially licensed set of keyboard and mouse: Here we took a closer look at the “Hori TAC Pro”.
