The Xbox chief Phil Spencer seems to be confident about how the Xbox Series X will perform against the PlayStation 5. Ever since he learned the exact specifications of the PS5, he feels better, says Spencer. He talks about the price, the launch date, and the games on the launch day of the Xbox Series X, as well as the comparison with the PS5.
Where does the information come from? Phil Spencer spoke in a podcast from IGN about the status of the new Xbox, which is set to launch at the end of 2020.
This is what he says about the price of the Xbox Series X:
I feel comfortable with the price we can launch with. I feel good about the price and performance we can achieve for the Series X. I am extremely confident about the overall package.
Phil Spencer
Spencer didn’t mention a specific price. He stated that they are “keeping their eyes wide open” and want to see what Sony does with the PS5 price.
Spencer says he has a “winning plan” for the console. It is Microsoft’s goal:
- to remain very agile on pricing
- to find a price that meets or exceeds fan expectations
Spencer felt even better since he saw the PS5 specs
This is what Spencer says about the comparison with the PS5: Spencer is not looking for conflict with Sony; he is not a fan of the “Console Wars,” but the comparison with the PS5 is naturally compelling.
He seems to be confident about that:
When we finally saw the public reveal [of the PlayStation 5], I even felt better about our own platform decisions. I also expected to feel this way.
Spencer praised the architect of the PlayStation 5, Mark Cerny, for innovations in audio design and the SSD: “That is impressive,” but pointed out the strengths of his platform.
They have taken a holistic approach with the Xbox Series X, from the CPU to the GPU to the RAM, the Velocity Architecture, latency, and backward compatibility. It took Microsoft years to reach this point.
This is what he says about the release date: Spencer reiterated the intent to bring the Xbox Series X for the Christmas season of 2020. Production in China is resuming after the corona lockdown. Currently, it does not seem like there will be delays.
China appears to be ahead in overcoming C-19, and one can see that factories are back to work.
On the hardware side, it is clear that the Xbox Series X was ready when he took it home to test, said Spencer.
Xbox One had too many games at launch
This is what he says about the launch games: Here Spencer seemed rather evasive. He said when it comes to the console’s momentum, it is not about one day, but that strong games continuously come.
The Xbox One had too many games on launch day. It helps no one if 8 games are out on day one.

Before the outbreak of the pandemic, it was assumed that the video game year 2020 would be defined by the battle for the top spot of the next console generation between the PS5 and Xbox Series X. At the moment, this competition seems to have faded somewhat into the background. All information from us regarding the Xbox Series X including release, specs, price, and games can be found here.
