The new Xbox codenamed Project Scarlett is set to release at the end of 2020. But Microsoft’s Phil Spencer is already playing with the successor of the Xbox One and is raving about it on Twitter.
What has Phil Spencer announced? The head of Xbox at Microsoft announced via Twitter that he has taken home an Xbox Scarlett. He is so excited about the device that it has become his main console. He plays with the new Elite Controller 2 and interacts with the community.
He then praises the team for their good work and states that 2020 will be a fantastic year.
Backward compatibility with Xbox One is important
How can Phil Spencer play with the new console already? Spencer must have taken home a prototype and is playing with it.
Since Microsoft places great importance on compatibility with previous consoles, it seems to be no problem to play existing games on the Xbox One with a Scarlett already. Spencer is thus already playing with and against other players on the Xbox One, as the tweet indicates.
As the site Ars Technica adds, this is a novelty: Earlier “prototypes” were only connected to private systems, but Project Scarlett is apparently already “in the wild.”

What is Xbox Scarlett anyway? It is the successor console of the Xbox One. It is supposed to be four times as powerful as an Xbox One X. The final name has not yet been determined; Project Scarlett is just the codename. “Xbox Two” is circulating as a possible name:
- The Xbox Scarlett is supposed to run on a specially developed Navi 2 chip from AMD.
- It will use particularly fast DDR6 memory.
- The console features a novel SSD hard drive that is supposed to eliminate loading times almost completely.
- It can support resolutions of up to 8K, although the focus is on 4K.
- Xbox Scarlett should be able to deliver up to 120 fps.
- Ray tracing will be supported.
- The backward compatibility with earlier consoles is a priority.
2020 will be exciting for Microsoft
When will Xbox Scarlett be released? There is no exact release date yet. However, the release is planned around Christmas 2020. A price has not yet been determined.
When will Microsoft unveil the new console? An official presentation with all exact hardware specifications is planned for next year. There is currently no date.
