In an interview, Xbox chief Phil Spencer spoke about the Game Pass and a possible release on additional platforms. He did not rule out releases on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. There was even a brief expression of admiration.
What is it about? The Game Pass, also referred to as Netflix for games, offers access to many games. For this, you need to subscribe monthly, but then you can use all included games for free.
In the meantime, this pass can be used not only on Xbox but also on PC and Android smartphones. A version for iOS is also in the works, where there have been ongoing issues with Apple.
But what about other platforms and especially other consoles? At least Phil Spencer does not rule out collaboration there in an interview with Gamereactor.
Game Pass is set to come to more platforms
What exactly does Spencer say? In the interview, the Xbox chief is asked whether he can envision the Game Pass on platforms from Sony and Nintendo and whether these companies would likely reject such an offering.
Spencer replied:
We are still working on some technologies on PC for streaming on larger screens and bringing it [the pass] to iOS. I think once we’ve accomplished that, we’ll look at other options.
There are smart TVs, there are Chromebooks, there are FireTVs, there are a lot of discussions we would have; we would prioritize depending on where we could find the most new players to whom we could bring our content.
In doing so, Spencer also does not rule out a release for PS4 and Nintendo Switch:
I love the Switch, I love PlayStation, honestly, I think they have done an amazing job as part of this industry.
I’m not sure if that’s the next big group of users for us, but we could be open to those discussions.
In the same interview, he also revealed how the Game Pass will become even better in the future.
What does it mean now? Phil Spencer is the head of the Xbox console division, but also of the Xbox Game Studios game software division. His statements regarding the Game Pass carry significant weight.
However, Spencer only expresses a general willingness to discuss. Much will also depend on partners like Sony and Nintendo.
The idea of the Game Pass on PS5 is certainly exciting. After all, for MeinMMO editor Leya Jankowski, it is even a decisive reason to prefer the new Xbox Series X over the PS5.
The offer is, in her view, really strong and will be even better with the addition of EA over the Christmas season of 2020.
With some tricks, you can also save a lot of money on the Game Pass:
Be careful, don’t just pay 10 € for the Xbox Game Pass – I almost made that mistake
