With Microsoft’s Game Pass, you can play current games for 13 euros a month without additional costs. Many gamers wish for something similar for their PS4 and PS5.
And a Game Pass could become the most important innovation for PS4 and PS5 in 2022. However, so far Sony has announced nothing of the sort. But everyone assumes that Sony will eventually introduce such a pass.
Now, Xbox chief Phil Spencer has commented on the discussion about the Game Pass in an interview with IGN. And in his view, the issue is quite clear.
The Game Pass for PS4 and PS5 is “inevitable”
What the Xbox chief says: In the interview, Spencer talked about the Game Pass and potential competition from Sony. He is surprisingly open and believes it’s good that the competition wants to try a similar system.
If I hear that others [developers] are doing things like the Game Pass or coming to PC, that makes sense to me because I believe that’s the right answer.
According to Spencer, it is a natural development in the industry that many developers and providers are looking towards subscription services. And the only question is how to best improve this system in the future.
In the interview, he also adds that he expects exactly that from the competition, namely to adopt functioning systems.
Because I think the right answer is to bring great games to market, bring them to PC, bring them to console, bring them to the cloud, and make them available on day one in the subscription. And I expect our competitor to do exactly that.
Furthermore, the Xbox chief adds that the Game Pass is primarily the best option for gamers as well:
I don’t want to sound like we have it all figured out, but I think the right answer is to enable customers to play the games they want, where they want, and give them the choice of how they build their library, and be transparent with them about our plans regarding our PC initiatives and our cross-gen initiatives and other things.
The Xbox Game Pass has significantly changed gaming
Xbox chief Phil Spencer explained in an interview that many publishers were afraid to put their games in the Xbox Game Pass. They feared that the Game Pass could devalue the game and reduce sales.
Today, Microsoft releases exclusive first-party titles and full-priced games in the Xbox Game Pass. With a subscription, users can play the game directly without paying for it.
In 2021, players could save 5,500 euros with the Game Pass compared to buying the games anew.
On the PS4 and PS5, it’s still different. There, you still have to buy each title at full price—unless you wait for corresponding offers or discounts in the PS Store. In rare cases, Sony includes a new game directly in the PS Plus subscription. This was the case with Rocket League or the party game Fall Guys.
