In WoW: Shadowlands, there is a reunion with many beloved characters from the Warcraft franchise. We present some of them to you.
World of Warcraft: Shadowlands will be an expansion that primarily deals with death and the various forms of the afterlife. However, this means that we will see a whole series of beloved (and hated) characters again. But which characters appear in Shadowlands? We have a small list for you and reveal who you can already look forward to.
Spoiler Alert: Even though we do not reveal the major story twists, we do mention the names of the characters and their whereabouts. You have been warned.
Kael’thas Sunstrider
Kael’thas was the former leader of the blood elves and an important character, especially in Warcraft III. He fought alongside Illidan and ensured that his people did not succumb to the hunger for magic. He helped capture Naaru and supplied the blood elves with fel magic.
This is how Kael’thas died: Players were able to defeat Kael’thas multiple times. Once he was defeated in The Burning Crusade in the raid “The Eye” after he absorbed too much nether energy. However, he did not die in that instance, but returned shortly thereafter to fight again at the Sunwell Plateau in a disfigured form before ultimately meeting his end.
This is what he does in Shadowlands: In Shadowlands, Kael’thas is wandering in Revendreth. He carries a “sinstone” and apparently must atone for his sins before he can be assigned a new role.
Lady Vashj
Lady Vashj was a handmaiden of Queen Azshara and first appeared in Warcraft III. Like many highborn, she was transformed into a naga 10,000 years ago, but remained loyal to her queen. She fought alongside Kael’thas and Illidan in Warcraft III and helped conquer the shattered world.
This is how Lady Vashj died: She was defeated by the heroes of the Alliance and Horde in the Serpent Shrine, a raid in “The Burning Crusade”. There she oversaw the naga’s plans to drain all the water in order to provide a home for the naga and simultaneously maintain control over life in the Zangar Marshes.
This is what she does in Shadowlands: In Shadowlands, she is no longer a lady, but a baroness. As Baroness Vashj, she leads one of the great houses of Maldraxxus and likely has some exciting stories to tell – even though her house was nearly destroyed.
Kel’Thuzad
Kel’Thuzad was a mage of the Kirin Tor who was very interested in necromancy. This ended with him being transformed into a lich and profaning the blood elves’ Sunwell. Later, he became a direct servant of the Lich King and a loyal servant of Arthas as he conquered Lordaeron.
This is how Kel’Thuzad died: Kel’Thuzad died multiple times. Once struck down by Arthas in Warcraft III, then later in “Vanilla” in Naxxramas. In the “Wrath of the Lich King” expansion, he led the necropolis Naxxramas once again but was defeated again. However, it is likely that he can be revived since his phylactery, an artifact containing his soul, was not destroyed.
This is what he does in Shadowlands: His exact role in Shadowlands is not yet known. However, it is likely that we will encounter him in Maldraxxus. It is home to many liches, and here lies the origin of the Scourge.
Uther the Lightbringer
Uther the Lightbringer was one of the most renowned paladins of the Silver Hand. He was considered kind-hearted and was a brave paladin who always defended the Alliance against threats like the Scourge or the Orcs.
This is how Uther died: Uther was slain by Arthas in Warcraft III after he became a servant of the Lich King. He later appears briefly in “Wrath of the Lich King,” but only as a ghost. His soul was trapped in the blade Frostmourne.
This is what he does in Shadowlands: We meet Uther fairly early in the Bastion area. However, he is not one of the “Good Ones,” but belongs to the Forsaken. These are Kyrians who resisted losing all their memories and held on to their personalities.
Draka
Draka is an orc woman and the mother of Thrall. She belonged to the Frostwolf clan and was an advocate of the old traditions of the orcs, always focusing on honor and the fundamentals of shamanism.
This is how Draka died: Draka died because her clan refused to submit to the new rules of the orcs, which were gradually corrupted by Gul’dan. She was killed during an ambush.
This is what Draka does in Shadowlands: Draka has become the baroness of one of the great houses in Maldraxxus. However, this house was nearly destroyed recently due to an incident, diminishing her power.
Ysera
Ysera is one of the oldest dragons and was the aspect of the green dragonflight. She is also referred to as “The Dreamer” because she watched over the Emerald Dream along with druids. Furthermore, she was the sister of Alexstrasza, the Lifebinder.
This is how Ysera died: Ysera was corrupted by the satyr Xavius in Val’sharah (Legion). After being attacked by the power of the Nightmare, she transformed into a nightmare dragon and had to be stopped by players, Tyrande, and many night elves. She died in an emotional cinematic and was elevated to the stars by Elune herself.
This is what she does in Shadowlands: A large part of the story of Ardenweald revolves around Ysera. She is in one of the wildseeds and is preparing to be reborn. More about Ysera’s story and the developments can be found here.
Alexandros Mograine
Alexandros Mograine was the Highlord of the Silver Hand and the original wielder of the Ashbringer. He killed hundreds of undead and was nearly invincible on the battlefield. To this day, he is a symbol of a strong, brave paladin who stood against the corruption of the undead.
This is how Mograine died: Alexandros was betrayed and killed by his own son Renault. This corrupted the Ashbringer, which subsequently captured Mograine’s soul. Only many years later was his soul freed through the sacrifice of Alexandros’ second son, Darion.
This is what he does in Shadowlands: In Shadowlands, Alexandros has risen to the top of one of the houses of Maldraxxus, but was mysteriously overthrown. Uncovering the truth is a rather lengthy quest line.
Hakkar the Soulflayer
Hakkar the Soulflayer is one of the most powerful Loa, who played a significant role in the establishment of the Gurubashi Empire. In exchange for blood sacrifices, he showed the trolls how they could increase their power and helped spread the empire throughout the entire Stranglethorn Vale. But Hakkar wanted more and more souls to someday devour all beings. When the trolls realized this, they turned against Hakkar and his loyal priests.
This is how Hakkar died: Hakkar the Soulflayer was killed by heroes in “Vanilla.” Later, the troll Jin’do attempted to siphon energy from Hakkar but was also destroyed in the process. Hakkar then dissolved and disappeared, only to reappear to defeat us another time.
This is what he does in Shadowlands: This is not yet quite clear. However, he seems to appear as a boss in the dungeon “The Other Side.” This is one of the small dimensions in the Shadowlands that belongs to the Loa Bwonsamdi.
Millhouse & Millificent Manastorm
Millhouse is a recurring character who has appeared since “The Burning Crusade.” He was imprisoned in the Arcatraz, where only the “most powerful and dangerous beings in the galaxy” were locked away. Since his release, it has not been entirely clear whether he is a good guy or a bad guy. The same applies to his wife Millificent, who was a boss in “Legion” and (like her husband) is very temperamental.
This is how the Manastorms died: They have not died so far but are in excellent health. This crazy couple will probably never be properly gotten rid of.
This is what they do in Shadowlands: In Shadowlands, players find them in the dungeon “The Other Side.” They have a secret laboratory hidden in this dimension and are not fond of being discovered. Here, they are tinkering with new inventions that they will also unleash on the players.
Are you looking forward to a reunion with these characters? Which heroes or villains would you like to see again in Shadowlands?
