WoW goes far beyond the borders of Azeroth. Will players soon travel even deeper into the universe?
The Game Director of World of Warcraft, Ion Hazzikostas, recently gave an interview on the Youtub channel of Cox n’ Crendor and also spoke about the future of World of Warcraft.
At its heart, World of Warcraft is a story set in the realm of “High Fantasy” – there are dragons, magic, various races, and all the typical elements that define fantasy. However, Warcraft has always had a touch of Sci-Fi, as traveling to distant planets (like Draenor) has been a part of the franchise for a long time.
Through additional elements, such as time travel (bronze dragons) or the Draenei (who have traveled through the galaxy), the Sci-Fi aspect of Warcraft always shines through. Even now, with the invasions of the Burning Legion, it becomes clear that technology – even if intertwined with magic – plays a significant role in movement. The leaders of the Legion use spaceships to conquer individual worlds.
Warcraft still has many planets to offer
But that doesn’t mean the end of the line. World of Warcraft could become “much crazier” and there are still many worlds and places that players can explore. One small glimpse of this can be found in Patch 7.3, as in the so-called “Rifts” players travel to other worlds that are besieged by the Legion – however, much will not be learned about these places.
Nevertheless, an effort is made to always provide players with a “familiar ground.” They should always feel as if they are still on their adventure in World of Warcraft and not suddenly in a completely different game.
What do you think about it? Do you wish for more Sci-Fi elements and new worlds in World of Warcraft? Or should the game focus more on magic, sword fights, and dragon battles?
