In the shop of World of Warcraft, there are low prices right now. However, players are angry, as they perceive one package as a rip-off.
Following the current rather negative trend in forums about World of Warcraft, a discount action in the WoW shop was received by many players as “somewhat average”. They sense a rip-off, as Blizzard makes vague statements.
What is the offer? Just in time for Christmas, Blizzard has a larger discount action in World of Warcraft. Many mounts, pets, and cosmetic helmets are reduced in price by between 50% and 66%. Particularly worthwhile is the “Farewell Package”, which includes a selection of mounts, pets, and cosmetic helmets for €50, compared to the regular sales price of €150 for all items.
Why are the players dissatisfied? The Farewell Package advertises that the offered items will no longer be available in the Blizzard shop from January 7, 2019, and will disappear “until further notice”. However, they reserve the right to “possibly offer the items again at a later date”. This creates the impression for many players that Blizzard wants to rip them off with the threat that the items might disappear forever.
Many accuse Blizzard of employing a classic “FOMO strategy” (“Fear of Missing Out”).
The timing is unfortunate: Players also criticize the timing of this package. That Blizzard offers a “Last Chance” package just before the end of the quarter is for many players clear evidence that they want to desperately boost revenues one last time. Normally, after a quarter, “Earning Calls” reports are sent to investors, which are then substantiated with figures.
On Reddit, many players perceive the offer and the timing as “sneaky” and the intention as “easy to see through”.
Probably no one would have been disappointed if Blizzard had simply held the discount action without “threatening” that items would permanently disappear. Thus, Blizzard has received further criticism from players and fueled the current mood with the tenor “Blizzard only wants money and is ruined by Activision“.
