The director of the Warcraft movie revealed which films were still planned and which story he would have pursued with the trilogy.
The Warcraft movie is now a few years old, and most fans have come to terms with the fact that there will be no sequel. There are many reasons for this – the biggest one is probably the lack of success in American theaters.
The films were supposed to be a trilogy: The original plan was for the Warcraft movies to be released as a trilogy. Had the first film been a success, there would have been parts 2 and 3. However, that is not the case. In response to a fan’s inquiry, director Duncan Jones answered on Twitter and explained what he had planned for the other two films.

Part 2 would have centered around Thrall: In the first film, Thrall played only a minor role. He was born and later kept alive by Gul’dan through demonic magic before he was later abandoned.
In the second film, we would have seen Thrall growing up as an orc slave in Blackmoore’s gladiator camp. He would have met a tauren here who told him about a land to the west (Kalimdor). There, Thrall could travel to find potential allies or perhaps even establish a new homeland.
Interestingly, Taretha is not mentioned. She is a human girl who meets Thrall in the original story of World of Warcraft and later experiences her death. Whether she would have had no role or only a very small one in the film is unknown. However, since her backstory also involves sexual violence, it is easy to understand why this would not have appeared in a film aimed at a younger audience.
Part 3 would have been the founding of Orgrimmar: In the last film, there would have been a gathering of the Horde’s troops. The orcs would have freed their brothers and sisters from the internment camps throughout the eastern kingdoms (similar to the in-game lore). It would have ended with a dangerous journey across the sea, after which the orcs would arrive in Kalimdor to establish their first real city on Azeroth: Orgrimmar.
Thus, the trilogy would have been wrapped around Durotan’s promise to find a homeland for his people.
No one left at Blizzard who worked on the film: In another tweet, Duncan Jones responds to the question of whether there is still a chance for the films. He replies with: “I have no idea, and no one I worked with on the film is still at Blizzard.”
But maybe a miracle will happen, and someday we will be treated to a second Warcraft movie. One should at least not give up hope…
