One of the great secrets of World of Warcraft: The War Within seems to have been solved. Finally, we know what the mysterious crystal Beledar is.
The World Souls saga of World of Warcraft is supposed to bring together many story threads, solve long-standing mysteries, and bring numerous stories to a conclusion. However, instead of providing many answers directly, The War Within has initially brought new questions.
One of the great puzzles is the crystal Beledar, which illuminates the area of Heilsturz and is revered by the Arathi. Now we finally know what kind of crystal this is.
What was known about Beledar? The crystal Beledar serves as a sort of sun in Heilsturz. Its light allows the vegetation to bloom and ensures that a somewhat normal life can exist even underground, like on the planet’s surface. The crystal is also revered by the Arathi who are stranded in Heilsturz and defend Beledar against the Nerubians (and thus Xal’atath).
However, Beledar changes its color at irregular intervals (at least in the story) and becomes filled with emptiness. Then, Heilsturz is plunged into darkness, wild animals become more aggressive, and enemy attacks increase.
This is what the community thought: In recent weeks and months, many players have speculated about what the crystal could be. Some common theories were quickly disproven, while others persisted.
- Sword Tip of Sargeras: Some initially thought that the crystal might be the sword tip of the blade that Sargeras drove into the planet at the end of “Legion.” However, this does not make sense. After all, Beledar is mostly filled with bright, positive energy. At the latest, the quests in Heilsturz completely disprove this theory, as the crystal was there before the sword was driven into the planet.
- Spaceship of the Naaru: Many also suspected that Beledar might be a spaceship of the Naaru, similar to the Fortress of Storms. Considering the names of the other spaceships – Exodar, Genedar, Xenedar – then “Beledar” would fit well into the concept. The runes around the crystal in the sky of Heilsturz are also similar to those at the crash site of Genedar.
These two theories have proven to be false.
Beledar is a part of Azeroth’s essence
What new information is there now? The new weekly quest for Dagran and Brinthe now provides the first insights into what Beledar really is. When you submit the quest, the titan facility reveals some exciting details:
The Core Path was created to catch a glimpse of Azeroth’s essence and to be able to observe it. However, during the creation of the Core Path, the Titans repeatedly encountered huge, large crystals, many of which still lie within the planet. These are “crystallized fragments of the essence of the World Soul.”
Dagran and Brinthe then discuss whether Beledar could also be such a crystal – and that seems extremely likely.
After all, the crystal frequently alternates between its “bright” and “dark” phases, thus representing more than just a symbol for the struggle that the World Soul is currently facing. Xal’atath’s goal of corrupting the World Soul with the energy of the void is apparently progressing. That Azeroth is fighting against it but continues to be increasingly corrupted is likely symbolized by the crystal Beledar.
It also fits well with the fact that Anduin first clearly heard the radiant song when he arrived in Heilsturz and saw Beledar – a part of the essence of Azeroth.

When will there be more information? More information about Beledar will likely be available soon. According to the PTR for Patch 11.0.5, there are already the first dialogues from NPCs that hint at Patch 11.1. And it sounds like the other side of the crystal Beledar is rising from the surface of the planet – and possibly will soon be a new, playable area…
