The new WoW expansion Battle for Azeroth has created quite a hype. This has also been noticeable on the streaming platform Twitch. For a brief time, World of Warcraft was even ahead of Fortnite.
WoW overtakes Fortnite on Twitch: At the release of Battle for Azeroth, World of Warcraft was the most watched game on Twitch. WoW had significantly more viewers than Fortnite for some time – a quarter of a million people watched World of Warcraft. Far more than double the number of viewers that Fortnite had at that time.
WoW stronger on Twitch thanks to BfA
WoW has never really had a strong presence on Twitch. This is partly because it is a too extensive game that is only partially suitable for streams. Many viewers find it too exhausting to engage with the content. With BfA, this has at least changed for a short time.
Almost 600,000 viewers simultaneously: In the past week, the peak of viewers for WoW was 590,245 viewers simultaneously across all languages (as of 15.08. at 18:20, via Sullygnome). At the same time, the maximum number of viewers for Fortnite was 533,013.
The popular English-speaking streamer Asmongold alone had over 56,000 viewers simultaneously on release night – even though, according to PCGamesN, he talked with his viewers for some time only about the loading screen of the new expansion.
New streamers are daring to play WoW: Asmongold also discusses in an interview with PCGamesN about the reasons for the surge in viewers. According to him, more streamers are now simply daring to stream WoW.
Through the growth of other streamers like him, who take good care of their community, other streamers are also gaining the courage to enter the WoW section. This is causing WoW as a whole to grow on Twitch.
Hype doesn’t last forever: Many of the users were probably really only there out of curiosity. The new expansion has likely attracted viewers who want to check out the new WoW.
Already, WoW is partially less popular than Fortnite again. However, Asmongold suspects that the number of viewers in WoW this time will not fall as sharply as it did with Legion earlier, when WoW disappeared back into the depths of Twitch. The current WoW streamers have put too much work into their streams for that.
