World of Warcraft: The War Within is set to release in summer 2024. Blizzard has now shared new information about raids, the instances designed for up to 30 players. There are significant changes.
How does it work with the solo raids?
- With The War Within, there is a new difficulty called “Story Mode.”
- Similar to the follower dungeons in Dragonflight, you can visit Story Mode alone or with up to 4 friends.
- The first raid of The War Within, the Nerub-ar Palace, is supposed to come with this new difficulty.

What about loot? That information is still missing. So far, the Raid Finder, or “LFR,” is the lowest difficulty for raids with the lowest item level loot. We do not yet know how much loot you can obtain from Story Mode and what level it will be.
The Story Mode is primarily designed to tell the story of WoW. Many important core details are said to be hidden in raids, according to Blizzard. So, those who do not want to visit the LFR and cannot find enough players will miss out on some content.
In the official forum, developer Limestone writes:
Many of the epic moments in the story have been told in dungeons and raids. […] With the story difficulty in the Nerub-Ar Palace, our goal is to provide players a way to experience the epic climax of the story surrounding Azj-Kahet when they otherwise would not have been able to. The difficulty is designed for a private party of 1-5 players and allows players to face Queen Ansurek without the help of other players or followers.
The developer thus confirms the Story Mode, but only for the last boss of the raid instance. The mode is intended to serve as the last chapter of the story, but can be repeated as many times as desired and will appear alongside the last LFR wing of the raid.
“Just remove the LFR”
The decision to introduce a Story Mode is very well received among players. In a thread on Reddit, users praise the opportunity to experience texts and cutscenes without having to truly raid.
In particular, the ability to go in alone is seen as excellent: this way, you won’t be excluded from a fight if some impatient player rushes into the boss room too early. Others want the chance to learn mechanics for themselves to master them later.
Some fans even suggest in the thread to simply replace LFR completely with this new mode.
At the moment, the raid finder is not really designed to promote social interaction and numerous players use it just to experience the story. The Story Mode, as it has been presented, is better for such purposes.
As Blizzard explains, the follower dungeons were the first experiment with instances that you can undertake alone. The Story Mode is meant to continue that. During the first playtesting of The War Within, MeinMMO editor and MMORPG expert Karsten Scholz noted that WoW is developing away from classic MMORPG systems: The War Within played – In the fruitless search for MMORPG DNA.
