The Twitch streamer Asmongold says that foreign YouTubers made $30,000 with his videos in some months. But that is no longer the case, so they asked him for help. Now, the popular streamer, thanks to WoW Classic , is working with them.
This is Asmongold: The streamer Asmongold has become, thanks to the rise of WoW Classic in recent months, the largest streamer on Twitch at times – he also appears to be constantly present on YouTube, although he is not active there.
What is “leeching?” The term “leeching” comes from leeches that attach themselves to the body of a host and feed off it. In MMO language, low-level players who let themselves be dragged through instances by higher-level players are called “Leechers”: They “suck” EXP from the one who does the actual work.
In the world of YouTube and Twitch, “Leechers” are people who earn money from the content of other larger streamers.
These are typically YouTubers who watch the stream of a popular streamer, cut scenes from it, and compile them into a YouTube video. This is a grey area but common practice.
YouTube is full of such videos in the gaming sector. This is related to the fact that many content creators are no longer on YouTube, now streaming on Twitch, after some rules shifted in 2017: Most believe they can earn more money on the gaming platform Twitch than with YouTube videos.
However, YouTube still has 2 billion viewers, making it a vast platform.
Asmongold always on YouTube, although he is not active there
So it was with Asmongold: If you’re browsing YouTube and like WoW, you’ll often be recommended videos featuring the Twitch streamer Asmongold prominently in thumbnails. Often, he “reacts” to something there.
However, these videos have nothing to do with Asmongold himself. These channels are run by “reuploader” creators who are not affiliated with Asmongold.
Some of these videos have millions of views.
This is changing now: The Twitch streamer Asmongold says there have been new changes at YouTube that make it so you can no longer earn as much money with “foreign contents.”
Therefore, some of the YouTube reuploaders who had been earning money with Asmongold before have approached him to ask if he would collaborate with them. Asmongold says one showed him figures of how much he had been able to earn with Asmongold videos. One month, it was $32,000:
- Asmongold now has an official, active YouTube channel, operated by the previous “reuploders” or “leechers.” They officially cut clips from his streams and upload them to YouTube.
- Even though Asmongold is now working with some to populate the new YouTube channel, he will not take action against other YouTubers who want to continue cutting clips from his Twitch streams.
- According to Asmongold, he has not yet agreed with his new partners on how the revenue will be distributed.
