Was Torghast in WoW: Shadowlands really too hard? Blizzard says it was just miscommunicated.
The Tower of Torghast has been a hot topic in World of Warcraft over the past few days. Just a few days ago, the subreddit was filled with complaints that the tower had become far too difficult and that the runs were simply not fun. It was too frustrating to battle mobs with extremely high HP for two hours only to die immediately at the final boss. In an interview, WoW’s Game Director explained: They simply failed to communicate how Torghast was intended to work.
What was said? In an interview with Polygon, Ion Hazzikostas, the Game Director of WoW, spoke at length about Torghast. This was before the first nerfs to the tower a few days ago. The conversation also touched on the difficulty level of the dungeon and how it was actually intended to be:
If level 1 is like a normal dungeon and level 2 is like a heroic dungeon, then level 6 is more like a “Mythic+7 dungeon.” And level 8 is more like a Mythic +13 or +14. And then there are some players who are very, very skilled and acquiring gear from many sources and are already doing Mythic+14 this week. But some players will never get there and others will only do so in months when they have more epic gear.

In clear terms, this means that not every player should be able to complete every level of Torghast immediately. However, the developers have failed to communicate this correctly. There are also no indications in the game that the higher levels have stricter requirements and are meant for higher item levels.
These changes are coming: Overall, Blizzard is pursuing four goals that are to be implemented in the coming weeks and months to make the Tower of the Necrolord more enjoyable and easier to understand. These are:
- Reduce the length of individual runs so that it doesn’t become a long grind
- Increase the success rate for some classes and specializations that are having particular difficulty
- Ensure that players receive interesting anima powers that make Torghast exciting and diverse
- Clearly communicate how difficult the individual levels are and when players should tackle them
The first two goals have already been tackled by Blizzard with hotfixes, so now most classes have a good chance of being able to handle Torghast alone.
In the long term, Blizzard wants to make many improvements, as Torghast should remain relevant throughout the entire expansion. Therefore, it can be expected that in one of the upcoming patches, it will be clearer what the difficulty of each level is intended to represent and how it compares to other content.
Are you still enjoying Torghast? Or are you glad if you never have to enter the tower again?
Another point of criticism is the loot in Shadowlands – Many players feel there is too little loot.
